    Multiple compatibility

    Definition:
    - In both types of antonymy discussed, binary antonymy and converseness, the
    antonymy come in pairs  call semantic system
    Vd: male and female between them constitute the English sex system
    what these system have in common: được chia ra nhiều nhóm/nhiều tầng, những
    những nhóm này cùng nằm trong từ hệ thống(system)
    vd: the color system: red, grey,…
    the plant system: holly, daffodil…
    SENTENCE MEANING
    Proposition- mệnh đề nghĩa
    Part of the meaning of the utterance of a declarative sentence which describe some
    state of affair (thing or person prefer to expression of a sentence)
    Câu mà nta khẳng định hoặc nhận định cái ý- cái định đề trong đầu người nói thì gọi là
    proposition. Mình chỉ biết khi người ta phát ngôn or viết ra thì nta mới hiểu đc
    A proposition is a statement about the state of affairs of the world, and it can be true
    or false
    Ex:
    1a. Harry took out the garbage
    1b. Harry took the garbage out
    2a. Isobel loves Tony  a=b= tony loves Isobel too
    2b. Tony loves Isobel  a=b= Isobel is loved by Tony
    3. Mr Dindlay killed Janet
    Mr Dindlay caused Janet to die

    UTTERANCE MEANING
    - Phát ngôn mà người nói bằng miệng mà người nghe có thể hiểu, nó có thể bằng
    câu , single phrase, or just a single word
    - Spoken
    - Physical event, event are ephemeral
    - May be grammatical or not
    - A piece of language
    - Meaningful or meaningless
    - By a specific person
    SENTENCE & UTTERANCE & PROPOSITION
    - A sentence:
    - An utterance: spoken language only. Accent and voice quality belongs to the
    utterance (unit of speech)
    - Proposition: cannot be said to belong to any particular language
    Ex: indicate whether each of the following sentence pairs expresses the same or
    different propositions
    1. Mary read the book/ the book was read by Mary  same
    2. Fred took back the book / Fred took the book back  same
    3. The cat chased the rat/ the cat was chased by the rat  different
    Ex: each pairs of sentences has the same or different proposition content
    a. Take out the garbage/ you will take out the garbage  same ( they both share
    the same line “take out the garbage”
    b. Can you pass the salt?/ the salt shaker is nearly empty  different
    DISTINCTION BETWEEN AN UTTERANCE AND SENTENCE AND
    PROPOSITION
    - Utterance: any sound of talk , that human produce. A paragraph may be an
    utterance
    Vd: ouch, my PS5, I hate rumors…  utterance
    “kdckdkdb”  not a utterance
    - Sentence: a sting of words put together by the grammatical of rule of a language
    expressing a complete thought
    Sentence & proposition
    - Proposition: is that part of the meaning of the utterance of a declarative
    sentence which describes some state of affairs. it is an idea that stays inside
    mind before being turned into utterance a sentence or an utterance
    + can be true or false
    + no grammatical information
    + no consideration for language
    Vd: “I like apples”
    “I like apples”
    “I like apples”
     1 sentence, 3 utterance (cùng một câu nhưng nói 3 lần thì nó là 3 utterance)
    Ex: sentence (S) or utterance (U)
    1. A statement by a tourist guide: the inscription above this door, translated into
    English, means Those who enter here will live forever  S
    2. What did you mean by telling me you’d think twice about lending money to
    Gary?  U
    3. When George says that his gun is loaded, he means it as a threat  U
