Social Emotional Learning

Social-emotional Learning

(Gontariu, 2019)

Social-emotional learning is a vital component of education and individual development.

It is the process which allows individuals to acquire and apply skills, knowledge and

attitude for developing healthy identities, managing emotions, achieving personal and

collective goals, feeling and showing empathy to others, establishing and maintaining

supportive relationships and making responsible and caring decision.

The CASEL framework adopts a systemic approach emphasizing the importance of

developing equitable environments for learning and coordinating practices across the

classrooms, families, schools and communities for enhancing all social, emotional and

academic learning of all students. CASEL framework has five core competencies which

include, self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills and

responsible decision making.

Self-awareness means the ability of an individual to understand his/her own thoughts,

emotions, strengths, weaknesses, qualities and values. Self-management is an ability of

managing own emotions, behaviours and thoughts in various situations effectively for

achieving goals and aspirations. Social awareness means understanding the perspectives pf

other people and empathizing with them such as for people belonging to diverse cultural

backgrounds and contexts. Relationships skills means the ability of establishing and

maintaining healthy relationships with various groups and individuals. While responsible

decision-making is the ability of making constructive and effective choices and decisions

regarding personal behaviour and social interactions in different situations.

SEL has a number of advantages for schools, classrooms, communities and families. It can

help in establishing safe and nurturing environments where students and teachers develop

caring and positive relationships. These can help in facilitating students’ learning,

development and generating creative solutions for the problems. Social emotional learning

also helps in enhancing social, emotional growth and academic performance of students.

Hence, social-emotional learning is important for the positive and constructive growth of

individuals. It is beneficial for schools, classrooms, families and communities. This can

produce long term improvement in students’ behaviours, attitudes, skills and academic

performance.
