RESUMEN
SUMMARY
Simulation of Gearbox Lubrication with SPH

An important design task of gearbox development is the optimization of their

lubrication over a wide range of operating conditions, lubricant viscosities, oil fill
levels, vehicle grades and dynamic maneuvering. Across the industry, a drive to
digitize testing means that new CFD methods are required to economically
reproduce this task in a virtual environment.

These requirements have led the market to consider particle-based CFD simulation
methods, which are particularly suited to handle free surface flows involving
complex geometries. PreonLab is one such particle-based CFD code based on the
implicit hydrodynamics of smoothed incompressible particles. PreonLab offers a
unique and efficient simulation tool that enables transient simulation of real-world
scenarios, such as lubrication monitoring in electronic transmission gearboxes.

AVL is the world's largest independent technology partner for the development,
simulation and testing of driveline systems as well as innovative automotive
solution concepts. For today and for the future.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is one of the branches of fluid mechanics

that uses numerical methods and algorithms to solve and analyze fluid flow
problems. Computers are used to perform the millions of calculations required to
simulate the interaction of liquids and gases with complex engineered surfaces.
Even with simplified equations and high-performance supercomputers, only
approximate results can be achieved in many cases. Continuing research,
however, allows the incorporation of software that increases the speed of
computation as well as decreases the margin of error, while allowing the analysis
of increasingly complex situations such as transonic fluids and turbulent flows.
Verification of CFD data is usually performed in wind tunnels or other physical
scale models.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is the analysis of systems related to fluid
flow, heat transfer and other associated phenomena (such as chemical reactions)
by means of computer simulation.
Some typical applications include:
Process industry (Chemical engineering): mixing equipment, reactors, polymer
molding.

Building: Environmental study of buildings: both external (snow and wind loads)
and internal (air conditioning).

Health and safety: Investigation of fire and smoke effects (in tunnels for example)

Motor industry: Combustion modeling, aerodynamics of vehicles.

Electrical and electronic engineering: Cooling circuits including microcircuits

Environmental engineering: Distribution of pollutants and effluents

Energy: Optimization of combustion processes

Medicine: Studies of blood flow through capillaries, arteries, veins, etc.

Computational Fluid Dynamics is widely used in different segments of industry and

supports the design and manufacture of hundreds of products, such as airplanes,
automobiles and ships, as well as the most diverse types of industrial equipment.
Computational Fluid Mechanics can be used from the conceptual phase of a
project, helping to determine the feasibility and the best product solution, up to the
production stage, allowing to represent different scenarios. With the help of CFD
tools it is possible:

Simulate diffusion and convection of fluid substances in a wide variety of

environments
Perform planning and management of water resources
Analyze vehicle aerodynamics and aerothermodynamics
Evaluate the cooling of equipment such as nuclear reactors, engines, etc.
Perform studies of environmental pollution characterization, gas dispersion,
analysis and simulation of pollutants and contaminants release in water currents.
Simulate hydrodynamics and hemodynamics.
Test and develop propulsion systems and power generation projects in general.
Nowadays there are different tools that help engineering professionals to perform
Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis. Some of them are multiphysics packages,
such as Ansys AIM, which combines the simulation of mechanical, thermal,
electrical and fluid-mechanical properties in a single interface and allows the
development of a complete project, from design to simulation and analysis of the
results.

However, there are also tools with exclusive focus on Computational Fluid
Mechanics solutions, such as Ansys Fluent and Ansys CFX software. These two
tools allow performing different CFD analyses such as turbulence, heat transfer,
chemical reactions, aeroacoustics, turbomachinery, fluid flow modeling, etc.
