B. Let Us Study
An impromptu Speech is given with little or no preparation, yet almost always with some
advance knowledge on the topic. When called to speak “off the cuff” on “the spur of the
moment”, is usually because the speaker is quite knowledgeable about the subject.
On the other hand, extemporaneous speaking is one of the most natural methods for delivering
a prepared speech. It is the presentation of a carefully planned and rehearsed speech, spoken in a
conversational manner using brief notes.
3
Before the Delivery • Relax, and show a confident smile and posture in front of your
audience.
• Identify the purpose of your speech (Will you entertain, inform, or
persuade?).
• Think of a striking statement which could get the attention of your
listeners (an anecdote, a quotation, or a joke)
During the Delivery • When it is your turn to talk, keep yourself composed and calm. Walk
unhurriedly at the appropriate area where you will deliver your speech.
• As you deliver your speech, establish an eye contact with your
audience and start right away with your powerful introductory
statements. Never forget to use transition words when moving from the
initial idea to the next one. (Remember our lesson on transitional devices
and use them to create organization in your speech!)
• Observe appropriate verbal and nonverbal cues and be mindful of the
time
After the Delivery Express your gratitude.
• Go back to your seat comfortably.
C. Let Us Remember
As you begin to prepare for any speech, it’s important to pin down exactly about what you
plan to talk. Preparation is the key to a good speech or presentation. Speech should be prepared
as much as possible in order to achieve an effective and organized speaking session. Through
sufficient preparation, a positive outcome can be reached.
On the other hand, advance knowledge of a topic and relaxed atmosphere can reduce your
