Wood 373-2017 Professional Presentation

Making “transparent” wood composites

Professional Presentation Format
Each group will provide a 15 slide presentation on “transparent wood” to describe the knowledge
gained from the laboratory exercises as well as integrate knowledge of their wood chemistry
from lecture. The slides need to have consistent format, with each group member presenting at
least one slide. The presentation cannot go longer than 15 minutes and each presentation will
be judged to determine if they meet the standard of excellence. Following each presentation,
there will be a 5-minute question and answer period.

Each presentation must have the following items:

• Title;
• Outline/overview introducing the audience to the content of the presentation;
• Motivation for making transparent wood;
• Background information pertinent to wood structure;
• Detailed process of creating transparent wood (use of schematics/drawings highly
recommended);
• Comparison of transparent wood samples to literature samples (use Google Scholar on
campus to track down references);
• Performance of transparent wood samples;
• Possibilities for future research in the area and/or visions for new applications and/or
drawbacks based on literature and lab activities;
• Concluding remarks about transparent wood;
• References and acknowledgements.

For your reference, based on the goal of the lab:

The following laboratory exercises will provide hands-on experience with delignification, wood
compositional analysis, resin infiltration and resin curing, along with material testing. These
laboratory experiments will allow the use of proper personal protection equipment, production
and handling of solutions and organic solvents, physical measurements of materials, and an
appreciation of the variability of working with natural materials such as wood.
