Pepe
Pepe
Pepe
Once Pepe undertakes the task of delivering a basket of apples from a signora to
her friend for a soldo. He doesn’t return until evening to collect the money. When
the signora asked about the delivery of apples he narrates her incident. When
Pepe was carrying apple basket on his head all the way to the square his friends
mock him as a donkey. Pepe bears it out of respect for the signora. But when they
began to mock his mother he pelts the apples at his mockers. He adds that if the
signora had seen that she would have enjoyed it. When the signora was sad about
stealing of the fruit, Pepe says missed apples smashed against the wall and
remaining apples were eaten after making peace with his mockers. When signora
abuses Pepe he enjoys it saying that she would have given him two soldi for his
accurate hitting.
Pepe’s elder sister was working as a house maid in a rich American’s house. Pepe
after knowing that her master is very wealthy and has many pairs of trousers, he
asks her to bring him the warmest one. When she tells that it is stealing, Pepe
assures her that when we take a little from someone who has a lot, that isn’t
stealing it’s just sharing. She gets him a pair of trousers and while they were
altering it into a convenient garment, the wife of the owner comes there and
scolds in ugly words until her husband arrives. The owner threatens him that he
would handover him to the police. Then Pepe says if he had many pairs of
trousers and the owner had none he would give him two pairs, even three though
it is impossible to wear three pairs at once in the summer. Hearing this owner
bursts out laughing. He treats Pepe with some chocolate and a franc piece.
These two incidents show Pepe’s power of convincing and amazing capacity to
turn unfavourable situation into favourable ones. For this Pepe earned both
criticism and appreciation of people around him. Some call him as an anarchist
and some others a poet. The story is remarkable for its light and humourous
narrative style.
