TITLE

Title
To calculate the capacity and dimensions of an overhead cylindrical water storage tank required
to supply a family of 5 for 6 months
INTRODUCTION

Introduction
Water is essential for life and as such all of us need a certain amount of water every day.
Therefore it is very necessary for us to ensure we have enough water every single day.

However, many of us face serious problems in relation to a regular supply of water.

Whenever there is power outage of electricity customers do not get water. This happens very
often. Also G.W.I’s pump in the community is very old and it would encounter mechanical
problems very often. In these cases customers have to rely on stored water or do without.

To combat the problem mentioned above the researcher seeks to investigate the amount
of water used by a family for 6 months. This information would be used to determine the
dimensions of a cylindrical overhead water tank that would hold enough water for the family for
6 months. The overhead tank would catch rain water and since there are two rainy seasons in the
year the family would have enough water available. Hence they would not rely on G.W.I.
METHOD OF DATA
COLLECTION

(D) An estimate of the amount of water used per 6 months.
 Step 2
Activity 2: (A) select five families with exactly five members.
(B) Distribute questionnaires to the 5 families.
 Step 3
Activity 3: (A) each family would be given two weeks to complete a questionnaire.
(B) Collect questionnaires at the end of the period.
(C) Compile information at the end of the period.

DISCUSSION OF FINDINGS
Discussion of findings

The data collected from the questionnaire was approximate. The accuracy in terms of the
water used can only be determined by the families. Also each family used different amounts of
water for a specified time.

Bar chart 1, Pie Chart 3 and Line Chart 5 showed the amount of water used for each family
in gallons for a period of 1 day, 1 month and 6 months. The highest amount of water was used by
family number 2 and the least by family number 1. The range for the 6 months was 9300 gallons.
Bar chart 2, Pie Chart 4 and Line Chart 6 showed the same information as Bar Graph 1, Pie
Chart 3 and Line Chart 5 but as in liters.

The Pie Chart 7 and Pie Chart 8 showed the amount of water used by each family. The
largest sector represented by family number 2 which represented a percentage of 23%. The
smallest sector is represented by family number 1 which is represented a percentage of 17%.

In order to build a cylindrical tank to facilitate each family the largest volume was taken
in consideration, a volume of 167,400 liters of water or a little more. A possible dimension of a
cylindrical tank was radius 3m and height 6m.
CONCLUSION
Conclusion

A capacity of 167,400 liters of water is required to supply a family of five members for 6
months.

A cylindrical tank with inner dimensions of radius 3m long and height 6m would hold
enough water for a family of five members for six months.
