1−e2 x−4
(b) lim x−2 [3 marks]
x →2 1−e

2. Given that the length of two parallel sides of a rectangle is increasing at a constant rate of 3
cm s−1 while the length of the other two parallel sides is decreasing at a certain rate so that the area
of the rectangle is always 50 c m 2 at any instant. If at an instant, the increasing sides have length
x cm while the decreasing sides have length y , and that P denotes the perimeter of the rectangle at
that instant, show that
dP y

2
The finite region R is bounded by the curve
(a) Using trapezium rule with four ordinates, find an approximation for the area of R , correct to
three decimal places. [6 marks]

(b) State, with a reason, whether your approximation underestimates or overestimates the area
of R . [2 marks]

7. The equation of a graph is y= .
x 2−5 x+ 4
(a) State the equations of all the asymptotes of the graph. [3 marks]
(b) Find the coordinates of the stationary points of the graph and determine their nature.

8. A drug is administered by an intravenous drip. The concentration, x , of the drug in the blood is
measured as a fraction of its maximum level. The drug concentration after t hours is modelled by the
differential equation
dx
=k (1+ x−2 x 2)
dt
Where 0 ≤ x<1, and k is a positive constant. Initially , x=0.

(a) Express in partial fraction. [3
(1+2 x)(1−x )
marks]
e 3 kt −1
(b) Hence solve the differential equation to show that x= 3 kt . [7 marks]

(c) After one hour the drug concentration reaches 75% of its maximum value and so x=0.75 .
Find the value of k . [2 marks]

(d) Verify that in the long term the drug concentration approaches its maximum value.
