ARTEMIS: THE FIRST WOMAN MISSION TO

MOON
By Syed Wasim ul Huda
ARTEMIS a lunar exploration program named after the Greek Goddess of the Moon will be landing first
female astronaut on the Moon by 2024.The world`s leading space research center, NASA is committed to
be successful to this mission by sending first female and next male astronaut on the Moon. So far 18 male
and female astronauts have been shortlisted among which 1 female and 1 male astronaut will be chosen
for the final flight.
NASA`s powerful Space Launch System (SLS) and the spacecraft ORION is near to end their testing and
development through which the two astronauts will travel 250,000 miles to the Moon. The astronauts will
explore the region of the Moon which was never visited before.
The mission has been designed in 7 segments.

• First CLPS Mission: In 2021, the first Commercial Lunar Payload Services(CLPS) deliveries
will begin with two companies delivering 16 instruments to the lunar surface.
• VIPER: The Golf-cart-sized rover will be the first to investigate lunar polar soil samples to
characterize the distribution and concentration of volatiles, including water, across a large region
on the Moon.
• CAPSTONE CubeSat: This small satellite will be the first spacecraft to enter the lunar near
rectilinear halo orbit. There it will test the new navigation techniques to validate the predictive
models, reducing uncertainties about the orbit.
• Artemis I: The uncrewed maiden flight to the integrated SLS rocket and Orion spacecraft will
verify spacecraft performance and test Orion`s heat shield during its high-speed Earth reentry to
nearly 5000 degrees Fahrenheit.
• PPE & HALO Launch: The Power and Propulsion Element (PPE) and the Habitual and
Logistics Outpost (HALO) are the first pieces of the Gateway.
• Artemis II: On this 10-day crewed test flight, NASA astronauts will set the record for the
farthest human travel from Earth. They will validate deep space communication and navigation
systems and ensure that life support systems keep them healthy and safe
• Artemis III: With confidence gained through Artemis I and Artemis II, Orion and its crew will
once again travel to the Moon, this time boarding the Human Landing System that will bring the
first woman and the next man to the Lunar surface.
Three companies have been chosen by NASA to develop Human Landing System technology.
SpaceX is one of those three companies and NASA will pay $2.9 Billion to SpaceX.
