FIRM UP
Music is an art form, and cultural activity whose medium is sound. Music is a way to
express our self and our feelings. Generally, music definitions include common elements like
rhythm, melody, harmony, pitch, meter and the sonic qualities of texture and timbre.

Secular Music
These are music that is not written for church. It includes loves song, music for
entertainment, socialization songs, narrative songs and others.

Types of Filipino Secular Music


1. Folksong- type of tradition that is mostly found in rural areas and was passed down
through many generations.

 tells of a history and reflects culture and traditions


 typically performs and expresses through dance or playing of guitars or other instruments
as an accompaniment.
 Originally passed down orally to the family, and to the other members of the community.
 Learned through rote
 Sung in her/his own dialect
 Begins in one key and ends in the same key
 Composers and lyricists are usually unknown
 Mood can be sentimental, playful and humorous
 Concepts are based on nature peoples work, tradition, culture
 Short and simple
 Either duple meter 2/4, triple meter 3/4, or quadruple meter 4/4.

a. Magtanim ay Di Biro
This song came from the Tagalog Regions. It talks about the difficulty of being a farmer.
It also describes how they get their muscles ache from working all day and that they must renew
their strength for the next day. Therefore, singing folksong is their way to entertain and forget
about their tiredness.

a person who lost the ring of inheritance, and would do anything to get it back

 It is a ritual that reenacts the meeting of Jesus Christ and His mother, Mary after His

Texture is how the tempo, melodic, and harmonic materials are combined in a
composition to sound thin or thick.

Monophonic- a single melody


Homophonic- a single melody and an accompaniment Polyphonic- a set of
different melodies and accompaniment

5. Form- is the over-all plan or structure of music.


5.1 Strophic- contains only ONE section. It consists of one melody written in
several stanzas and is represented by the letter A

 an instrumental music that mostly can be found in fiestas that are celebrated in
various provinces of the Philippines to honor different patron saints
 This consist of instruments the belongs to different classification
such as brass, woodwind and percussion instruments.
 During the Spanish period, Filipinos took opportunity to hone their musical talents to
avoid recruitment into labor camps
 Marching bands, called bandas, were very popular during the American regime

2. Rondalla
 derived from the Spanish word ronda which
means “serenade”. It is an ensemble of
stringed instruments that are played with a
plectrum or pick
 originated in Spain but became most popular in
Philippine folk music
 Initially use as accompaniment to folk dances and
traditional Filipino songs but evolved its
versatility and capable to play any genres or music

3. Bamboo Organ
 The national treasure bamboo organ
was built completely in 1824 under the
supervision of Father Diego Cera
who was from a family of organ-
builders
 It was designed with pipes made of
902 bamboo and the remaining pipes are
made of 109 metal. It is housed at St.
Joseph Pari

4. Musikong Bumbong
 Is an original Filipino marching
band that
 uses bamboo instruments and
has a similar physical
structure of brass band
instruments but different sound
production
 The pitches and melodies come
from the voice of the instrument
player
 Many of this bands can be found in Malabon and was said to be
the origin

5. Himig Kawayan
 Popularly known as “singing
bamboos” of the Philippines
 An ensemble of percussion and
woodwind instruments that

 Similar to Banduria has 14 strings


 Longer neck and fret board
 Lower pitch than the Banduria
 Has an f hole as a sound hole

Bajo de Unas

 Also known as Double Bass


 Largest instruments in Rondalla
 Uses the hand of the musician to pluck the strings
 and create a sound
 Has the lowest pitch in rondalla

Himig Kawayan

 A set of angklung has different pitches

Talunggating

 Bamboo marimba
 Usually plays the melody in Himig Kawayan
 Struck by mallets made from rattan and rubber at its

Kalagong

 Is an instrument that produces a hollow gong-like-sound


 played by tapping the top holes of the bamboo by any rubber
 slipper like material
 It serves a bass of the Himig KAWAYAN
