2. COMPANY PROFILE
Makoto Light Metal Co. LTD. was established in 1968, right in the middle of Japan
's high economic growth, in which optical industry had contributed to act one of the main
roles. In those days, most of the manufacturers in the machining industry, usually running
in small shops, were struggling against the long & heavy raw materials usually in the form
of bars or pipes. Facing this absurd, tiresome & wasteful work of his customers, our
founder Shigenori Kobayashi realized that he could do something to this problem. It was
how we started our distribution business of light metal materials with the little extra service
of cutting into pieces as required by the individual customer. This was the first appearance
of light metal distributor who provides this kind of service in Japan [1].

All throughout its more than 30 years in the business, the role of Makoto Light Metal
changed together with the drastic transition of manufacturing industry in Japan [1].

The establishment of Philippine Makoto Corporation was also one of the necessary
results of our strides to serve our customer better. Fortunately, this new move became a
big turning point and that was more than what we expected. With the support of our
customers and our great partnership, we expanded not only in the original field of business
which is metal machining, but also in the field of assembly of optical products & lens
production. We are striving to gain further improvement in our capability as an integrated
supplier of optical and metal products, from the initial process of material handling up to
the final assembly. We strive harder to build well-designed integrated control system to
achieve customer satisfaction. As a example to show our continuous effort to answer the
growing demand from the customers, we established an additional facility in Cebu named
as Makoto Metal Technology, Inc. We branched out the metal machining division of
Philippine Makoto aiming for further expansion in each area of business. We ensure that
this will become one big step for our future [1].

As a example to show our continuous effort to answer the growing demand from the
customers, we established an additional facility in Cebu named as Makoto Metal
Technology, Inc. We branched out the metal machining division of Philippine Makoto
aiming for further expansion in each area of business. We ensure that this will become
one big step for our future.

Makoto started as a wholesaler of materials and expanded its business to

machining and die-casting in response to the changes and rising demands in Japan. We
ventured to other countries, specifically in Cebu, Philippines for business expansion and
started as a small die-casting company with only less than ten employees. We grew to
become an integrated manufacturer of die-casting, optical lens, metal machining, and unit
assembly service supplier with over a thousand employees. To all of our employees to
continually grow and learn, we strive to maintain a positive work environment and
successful training conducted to deliver even better products to our customers.

Many of our employees have been visiting Japan for a specific period wherein they acquire
the skills and knowledge continually. We exert effort to pass the skills and culture from
Japanese expatriates to our Filipino employees. Through this, Makoto challenges each

1
employee to excel and progress not only as an employee but as an individual. A tradition
developed within the company wherein there will be a turn-over of the knowledge and
skills that one employee gains and learns in the company to have a culture in which
departments work together without gaps and resolve problems that possibly occur.

It has been over 26 years after Makoto was established here in the Philippines. In the
recent years, we ventured out into a new field which is product development which focuses
more on mechanical designs. Our trained employees in Cebu are taking lead in this step.

We will continue to share our knowledge and skills so that we will grow together and excel
as one. Also, we continuously improve all the learnings we inherited to produce better
quality products at all times. All products made by Makoto proudly made through Makoto’s
way. Products and services manufactured wherever and whenever are assured of the
best quality.

5. CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Working today possesses many challenges for employees. Difficulties in balancing
work and private life are common because most people in employment spend a
substantial number of hours at work. Makoto considers achieving a work-life balance and
targeting measures to promote this. The goal is not only to make employees more
productive but also happier and more balanced. We apply a holistic approach to the
activities in our company that encourages our employees to participate. All their efforts
and time rendered were surely recognized which doesn’t just benefit them but also the
company. The activities mentioned below are practiced and constantly improved within
our work environment.

5.1. Continuous Improvement

Seeking small improvements in processes and products to increase quality and
reducing waste is one of the main goals of Makoto. We challenge our employees to share
their ideas to further improve the current process to meet the objectives set to satisfy
customers. Each month, we conduct direct and indirect kaizen activities. Any ideas are
accepted because we strongly believe it helps each one of us to think more outside the
box and be more resourceful not just to the problems encountered in the company but
also in our daily activities. All the employees are not just encouraged but are trained to
come up with ideas for new projects, solutions, and improvements. Every year we held an
activity wherein we showcase all the improvement projects. Furthermore, we guarantee
to award them to make sure that their effort and time invested in making it into success
are paid off. In other words, we bring any ideas into reality.

5
5.2.Training
Training isn’t just important to any company, it is vital. It helps empower employees
and leaders to align shared goals and objectives. Moreover, it helps increase the long-
term health and performance of the company. We look for different pieces of training by
assessing the skills of our employees then evaluate what necessary training to conduct.
Training may incur downtime but the benefit it gives is significant.

Training helps improve an employee’s performance which increases their

satisfaction and morale. It creates a supportive workplace which shows that the
employees are valued. With this, we will have a greater understanding of our
responsibilities, and in turn, build our confidence. This confidence will enhance our overall
performance which benefits the company in return. Increased efficiency in processes will
ensure project success increasing innovation and new strategies for improvement. We
believe that great ideas can be gathered and brought into reality.

5.3 Environmental Activity

We do our best to provide a healthy and safe work environment and processes that
enable our employees to work injury and illness free. Also, we are committed to comply
with all the applicable environmental rules and regulations to cut our carbon footprint. To
achieve this we:

1. Recycle most of our resources and continually exert effort to deal wirh any non-
conformities upon the environment from our operations and products. For instance,
we use aluminum as one of the main material in our production. It is known as one
of the most efficient material to process which results to reducing the total exhaust
emission of about 350kg of CO2 in every 1 ton of aluminum production according
to Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) .

2. Operate in a way that’s performing continual improvement in environmental

sustainability through waste minimization, conservation of resources, managing
6
hazardous materials, and raising environmental awareness and responsibility
among our employees.

3. Makes sure that our products and services offered aligns the requirements of the
Environmental, Health and Safety regulations and continually establish controls in
our company-wide Environmental Management System to assure the
implementation of the requirements.

6. COMPANY HISTORY

8
9
7. METHODS, PROCESSES, AND EQUIPMENT INVOLVED IN
THE MANUFACTURING
7.1. Methods
There are broad categories of Metal Manufacturing. This are the processing methods of
manufacturing the very important material in this modern world known as the metal: One
of those are the metal forming and shaping, metal molding, rapid prototyping, joining,
machining, finishing and the many more metal manufacturing methods.

7.1.1. Metal Casting

Metal casting is a modern process with ancient roots. In the metal casting process,
metal shapes are formed by pouring molten metal into a mold cavity, where it is cooled
and later extracted from the mold. Metal casting is arguably the earliest and most
influential industrial process in history. It’s used to make many of the metal objects used
in our daily lives: automotive parts, train wheels, lamp posts, school bus pedals, and much
more. Plus, metal casting foundries rely on metal recycling as a cost-efficient source of
raw material, significantly reducing wasted scrap metal that might end up in landfills [4].

7.1.2. Metal forming and shaping

Metal forming processes are classified according to the effective stresses into
forming under (i) compressive, (ii) a combination of tensile and compressive, (iii) tensile,
(iv) bending, and (v) shearing conditions. Examples of this are rolling, forging, extrusion,
drawing, sheet forming, powder metallurgy, and molding [5].

7.1.3. Metal Molding

is a metalworking process in which finely-powdered metal is mixed with binder
material to create a "feedstock" that is then shaped and solidified using injection molding.
The molding process allows high volume, complex parts to be shaped in a single step.
After molding, the part undergoes conditioning operations to remove the binder
(debinding) and densify the powders. Finished products are small components used in
many industries and applications.

Examples:

Blow Molding, CNC Machining, Centrifugal Casting, Continuous Strip Molding,

Compression Molding, Profile Extrusion, Continuous Lamination, Injection Molding,
Filament Winding, Thermoforming,Vacuum Forming, Pressure Bag Molding, Pressure
Forming, Pulshaping, Twin Sheet Forming, Pultrusion, Liquid Resin Molding, Reaction
Injection Molding (RIM), Rotational Molding, Resin transfer molding (RTM) [6].

10
7.1.4. Rapid prototyping
Stereolithography - SLA or SL, 3D Printing - 3DP, Selective Laser Sintering - SLS,
Fused-Deposition Modeling - FDM, Solid-Ground Curing - SGC, Laminated Object
Manufacturing - LOM, Multi-Jet Modeling - MJM, Direct Shell Production Casting - DSPC,
Polyjet Technology, Laser Engineered Net Shaping – LENS.

7.1.5. Joining
Joining is an important process in a number of industries, such as aerospace,
automotive, oil, and gas. Many products cannot be fabricated as a single piece, so
components are fabricated first and assembled later. Joining technology can be classified
as a liquid-solid-state process and mechanical means. Liquid-solid-state joining includes
welding, brazing, soldering, and adhesive bonding. Mechanical joining includes fasteners,
bolts, nuts, and screws.

Metal joining is a process that uses heat to melt or heat metal just below the melting
temperature. Joining metal by fusion is known as fusion welding. Without fusion, the
process is known as solid-state welding. Fusion welding includes arc welding and laser
welding, Whereas solid-state welding such as friction stir welding (FSW) where process
occurred below the melting temperature [7].

Examples:

Welding, brazing, soldering, diffusion bonding, adhesive bonding, and mechanical joining
.

7.1.6. Machining
Machining is a manufacturing term encompassing a broad range of technologies
and techniques. It can be roughly defined as the process of removing material from a
workpiece using power-driven machine tools to shape it into an intended design.
Most metal components and parts require some form of machining during the
manufacturing process. Other materials, such as plastics, rubbers, and paper goods, are
also commonly fabricated through machining processes.

Types of Machining Tools

11
There are many types of machining tools, and they may be used alone or in conjunction
with other tools at various steps of the manufacturing process to achieve the intended part
geometry. The major categories of machining tools are:

 Boring tools: These are typically used as finishing equipment to enlarge holes
previously cut into the material.
 Cutting tools: Devices such as saws and shears are typical examples of cutting
implements. They are often used to cut material with predetermined dimensions,
such as sheet metal, into a desired shape.
 Drilling tools: This category consists of two-edged rotating devices that create
round holes parallel to the axis of rotation.
 Grinding tools: These instruments apply a rotating wheel to achieve a fine finish or
to make light cuts on a workpiece.
 Milling tools: A milling tool employs a rotating cutting surface with several blades to
create non-circular holes or cut unique designs out of the material.
 Turning tools: These tools rotate a workpiece on its axis while a cutting tool shapes
it to form. Lathes are the most common type of turning equipment.

Types of Burning Machining Technologies

Welding and burning machine tools use heat to shape a workpiece. The most
common types of welding and burning machining technologies include:

 Laser cutting: A laser machine emits a narrow, high-energy beam of light that
effectively melts, vaporizes, or burns material. CO2 and Nd:YAG lasers are the
most common types used in machining. The laser cutting process is well-suited for
shaping steel or etching patterns into a piece of material. Its benefits include high-
quality surface finishes and extreme cutting precision.
 Oxy-fuel cutting: Also known as gas cutting, this machining method employs a
mixture of fuel gases and oxygen to melt and cut away material. Acetylene,
gasoline, hydrogen, and propane frequently serve as gas media due to their high
flammability. This method’s benefits include high portability, a low dependence on
primary power sources, and the ability to cut thick or hard materials, such as sturdy
steel grades.
 Plasma cutting: Plasma torches fire an electrical arc to transform inert gas into
plasma. This plasma reaches extremely elevated temperatures and is applied to
the workpiece at high speed to melt away unwanted material. The process is often
used on electrically conductive metals that require a precise cut width and minimal
prep time [8].

Machining Processes:
 Turning, boring,
 drilling, milling,
 planing, shaping,
 broaching, grinding,
 ultrasonic machining,
 chemical, electrical,
12
 and electrochemical machining and high-energy beam machining.

7.1.7. Finishing Operations

Finishing operations occur at the end up the manufacturing process, after the part
has been formed and secondary processes have been completed. These operations can
add a logo to a part, enhance its visual appeal, augment its durability, or remove elements
left behind by an earlier manufacturing process.

Types of Finishing operations

1. Trimming – Many injection molding processes leave behind a gate or runner that
should not remain on the final product. Our automated part trimming process
assures the accuracy of the gate/runner removal, so the way parts look exactly
matches customer expectations.
2. Pad Printing – Otherwise known as tampography, pad printing involves transferring
a 2D image onto a 3D object. It can be used successfully on nearly any kind of
substrate. Our robotically controlled custom pad printing services allow the images
to be accurately applied to parts with branding, volumetric graduations, and
instructions perfectly placed. The six-axis movement allows multiple faces of the
part to be printed in one cycle.
3. Packaging and Labeling – Our customers have access to a wide range of packing
options, including point-of-sale (POS) packaging. Labeling can be applied to parts,
assemblies, sub-assemblies, and packaging according to the customer’s
specifications.
4. Surface Finishing – This is a term that covers a wide range of industrial processes
that in some way modify the surface of a product. Our surface finishing capabilities
include the following:
 Polishing – Refined surface finishes can be added to your product using a
variety of techniques.
 Laser engraving – This process uses a specialized laser machine to create
extremely precise marks and designs on metal or plastic parts.
 Powder coating – Powder coating services involve spraying dry powder onto a
surface, usually via an electrostatic method, and then curing the part in an oven.
It creates a thick, durable coating.
 Plating – This process involves permanently affixing metal onto a surface.
Electroplating, which uses an electric current to bond metal to a conductive
surface, is one of the more common options used by plating companies.
 Anodizing – This is an electrolytic process that crates a hard oxide layer,
resulting in a highly corrosion-resistant coat. Anodizing services are usually
performed on aluminum parts [9].

13
7.2. Metal Manufacturing Equipments

7.2.1. Lathe
Consists of a rotating work-piece upon which the workable object (in this case,
metal) is placed the result is the symmetrical and specific shaping of the product. As the
product rotates, various tools are used to cut, knurl, drill or otherwise alter the metal.

7.2.2. Drilling Machines

Also called drill presses, consist of a fixed drill that is mounted or bolted to a stand
or workbench. Drill presses are used in much the same way as handheld and power
drills, however, the stationary nature of drill presses requires less exertion to achieve
proper drilling and is much more stable.

14
7.2.3 Milling Machines
Use a stabilized rotating cutter to machine a piece of metal, but allow more
versatility by additionally performing sideways cuts. Some modern milling machines have
a mobile cutter, while others have a mobile table that moves about a stationary cutter to
complete the desired finishing effect.

7.2.4 Hobbing Machine

Is similar to a milling machine in that a rotating cutter performs the cutting action,
however, they allow for simultaneous movement of both the cutter and the product being

15
machined. This unique capability makes hobbing ideal for 3D machining applications that
require uniform tooth profiles.

7.2.5 Honing Machines

Also known as hones, consist largely of one or more rotating tips that, in
metalworking, enlarge holes to a precise diameter and improve surface finish. Types of
honing machines include handheld, manual and automatic.

16
7.2.6 Gear Shapers
Fabricate internal gear teeth. This is accomplished using a reciprocating cutter that
has the same pitch as the gear being cut. Modern gear shapers allow for increased
precision by employing forward stroke engagement and backward stroke disengagement.

7.2.7 Planer
Are large-sized shaping machines that move the actual metal product as opposed
to moving the cutting mechanism. The result is similar to that of a milling machine, making
planers ideal for shaping flat or long surfaces.

17
7.2.8 Grinders
Are modern machining tools that use an abrasive wheel to create fine finishes or
faint cuts. Depending on the specific grinder, the abrasive wheel or product is moved from
side to side to achieve the desired finish.

7.2.9 Broaching Machine

Broach, uses tall chisel points to apply linear shearing and scraping motions to the
given material. Broaches are often used to create non-circular shapes out of holes that
have been previously punched in the metal.
