in Listening Part A, you are asked to draw some conclusion;


• Determine: Who the speaker is, what, and where based on the clues
given in the conversation.
• In this type of question, the answer is not clearly stated; instead you must
draw a conclusion based on clues given in the conversation.
WHO

Analysis:
From the second line of the conversation, the clues are homework
and quiz. It tells that the man is probably a teacher.
Therefor the correct answer is (C).
EXAMPLE

(man) : I'd like to deposit this check in my account, please.


(woman) : Would you like any cash back?
(narrator): Who is the woman?

(A) A store clerk


(B) A Bank Teller
(C) An Accountant
(D) A Waitress

Analysis:
From the conversation, the clues are account and cash back.
It tells you that the woman is probably a bank teller. So, the best answer is (B)
WHAT

Analysis:
The man says that he would check the books out now. Since the circulation
desk is where you go to check books out from a library, the man will probably
go to the circulation desk next. Therefore the correct answer is (D).
EXAMPLE

(woman) : Have you deposited your paycheck yet?


(man) : No, but that's next on my list of errands.
(narrator): What will the man probably do?

(A) Earn his paycheck


(B) Write a check for a deposit on an apartment
(C) Go to a bank
(D) Make a list of errands to run

Analysis:
The clues are paycheck and errands.
It tells you that the man will probably go to a bank next. So, the best answer is (C).
WHERE

Analysis:
From the conversation, the clues are water, sand, and suntan lotion.
It tells you that the conversation probably takes place at the beach.
Therefore the correct answer is (B).
EXAMPLE

(man) Did you get the bread, eggs, and milk?


(woman) Now we need to stand in line at the checkout counter.
(narrator) Where does the conversation probably take places?

(A) In a restaurant
(B) At a library
(C) On a farm
(D) In a market

Analysis:
The clues are bread, eggs, milk, checkout counter.
It tells you that the conversation probably takes place in a market. So the best answer is (D)
CONCLUSION

It is common for you to be asked to draw one of the following


conclusion in Listening Part A:

• WHO is probably talking?


• WHAT will she/he probably do next?
• WHERE does the conversation probably take place?
SKILL 5:
LISTEN FOR WHO AND WHAT IN PASSIVES

• It is sometimes difficult to understand who and what is doing the action in


a passive sentence.
• A passive sentence is a sentence where the subject does not perform the
action of the verb. In fact, in a passive sentence, the action of the verb is
done to the subject.
PASSIVE VOICE
• ACTIVE SENTENCE:
I ATE TURKEY LAST NIGHT
• PASSIVE SENTENCE :
THE TURKEY WAS EATEN BY ME LAST NIGHT
Analysis:
In the conversation, the woman uses an active sentence that means that Sally opened a
checking account. Because the woman uses active sentence, so the answer is in passive
sentence that is a checking account was opened to express the same idea.
So, the best answer is (C).
EXAMPLE

(Woman) : Alice needs to pay her tuition today.


(Man) : But her tuition has already been paid.
(Narrator) : What does the man imply?

(A) Alice's education has been paid


(B) Alice's tuition needs to be paid
(C) Alice has already paid her fees.
(D) Alice has already received the money

Analysis:
The man uses passive sentence "....has already been paid.". It means that the answer is in
active sentence. The best answer is (C): Alice has already paid her fees.
It expresses the same idea.
SKILL 6:
LISTEN FOR WHO & WHAT WITH MULTIPLE NOUNS

• When there is more than one noun in a sentence in Listening Part A,


it is common for the answers to confuse which noun does what.
Analysis:
In the woman's response to the man's question, she says "Mara replaced Robers".
It means that Mara is in the band, and Robert is not. Therefore, the best answer is (D).
CONCLUSION

• If the dialogue contains a passive statement,


the question is often an active statement.

• If the dialogue contains an active statement,


the question is often an passive statement.
EXAMPLE

(man) : Why is Bill not at work this week?


(woman) : His doctor made him take a week off
(narrator) : What does the woman mean?

(A) The doctor decided to take some time off from work.
(B) The doctor told Bill he wasn't too weak to work.
(C) Bill was mad when the doctor took some time off
(D) Bill took a vacation on his doctor's orders.

Analysis:
In the conversation, the woman says "His doctor made him take a week off".
The best answer is (D), "Billl took a vacation on his doctor's order"
