Classroom activity 2 — Animals

Grade: GESE Grade 1 (CEFR pre-A1)
Focus: Talking about animals
Time: 30 minutes
Aims:
To practise vocabulary for GESE Grade 1: animals and adjectives
 To develop communication skills
To prepare candidates for the GESE Grade 1 exam
Materials needed:
Worksheet 1 — pictures of Grade 1 example vocabulary (from Classroom activity 1 — Colours,
parts of the body and clothing)
Worksheet 2 — pictures of animals

Preparation
Cut Worksheet 2 — pictures of animals into individual flashcards.

In class
Warm–up and review of Classroom activity 1 — Colours, parts of the body and clothing (4 minutes)
Ask students what questions and answers they can remember from the exam from Classroom activity 1 — Colours, parts of
the body, clothing.

Picture circles (10 minutes)

1. Divide the class into two or three groups and ask each group to make a circle. Give a picture of an animal to each student.
Two students from each group go into the middle of the circle and the teacher says: ‘Touch the elephant.’ The students
in the middle of the circle find the student with the picture of the elephant and touch it. The first student to touch the
picture is the winner.
2. The winner changes places with the student with the elephant picture and the student with the elephant picture goes
into the middle of the circle. Give a new instruction, eg: ‘Touch the lion.’ The game continues.
3. Extension: Before the students change places, the student on the inside says one or two correct sentences about the
‘outside’ picture (eg ‘It’s a big elephant/It’s grey’). Repeat the game with a student giving the instructions.

Touch the picture (8 minutes)

1. The teacher puts some animal flashcards on the board. The class makes two teams in lines at the back of the room. Say
the name of one animal on the board. One student from each team walks/runs to the board and touches the picture. The
first student to touch the picture of the correct animal wins a point for their team.
2. Extension: For an extra point ask the winning student to say one or two sentences about the animal, eg: ‘The dog’s black
and white. It’s a small dog.’

Miming (6 minutes)
1. The teacher divides the students into two lines opposite each other (Teams A & B). Give every student a flashcard of an
animal. They must not show it to the other students.
2. Students from Team A mime their animals and the student opposite guesses the animal.
3. When all the animals have been guessed correctly, the game is repeated, but this time, Team B mimes. Team A then
reorganises to face different students. Repeat the game. In large classes, teams can be many small groups.

Review (optional) (2 minutes)
