PREFACE

I express my deep sense of gratitude to Allah SWT, God Almighty for giving me
health and opportunity and enabling to completion of Module 3 English for Social
Communication Teaching Materials in order to fulfill the task of Compiling PBL-
Based Teaching Materials (Project Based Learning) for PPG Daljab students
Batch IV 2021, Universitas Negeri Gorontalo.

The preparation of this problem-based teaching material is to identify learning


problems experienced by students caused by competency deficits or
misconceptions. This teaching material is given at level X of the Vocational High
School (SMK) level which contains explanations of functional texts in the form of
descriptive, Problem Based Learning (PBL) based approaches, implementation
and evaluation. In this teaching material, the authors present several references
and solutions to overcome competency deficits and misconceptions in learning
Module 3 Learning English Materials 1 Descriptive Text (Person). This teaching
material was developed by prioritizing the Higher Order Thinking Skill (HOTS)
approach and integrating the Technological, Pedagogical, and Content Knowledge
(TPACK) thinking framework.

I express my deepest gratitude to my supervisor Mrs. Sri Agriyanti Mestari, S.Pd,


M.Ed. TESOL who has provided guidance, direction, and revision in making this
teaching material until it is completed properly.

Finally, I hope this teaching material will be useful for prospective audience.

A. INTRODUCTION

1. Short Description

This unit handles descriptive text. Do you know the descriptive text?
Well, based on its name, Descriptive Text, it is closely related to
describing something like an object, a person, an animal, a place and a
thing. It tries to engage the reader's five senses to conjure up images,
sounds, smells, tastes, and feelings about the subject matter of the text.
In this module, you will learn a text that describes a specific person.
You will also find about the generic structure, social function, language
features and examples of descriptive text.

2. Relevance

The main objective of this module is to help you understand the


definition of descriptive text, in particular the aspect of a description
of person. You should also know the benefits of writing such as its
social function. In addition, it is necessary to identify the language
features (words, phrases, sentences) commonly applied to this type of
writing. With this knowledge, you can write descriptive essays in a
meaningful way. This module attempts to combine theory and
practice with the clear educational objective of providing you with a
general understanding of descriptive text.

3. Study Guide

This module is organized as follows: in the first part (Introduction),
we provide a brief of description, objectives, and guide about this
module. In the second part (Main Section), it is essentially about
learning outcomes, learning material, and learning activities. It is
designed with clear explanation about descriptive text such as its
definition, social function, and language features. The learning
activities in this module are designed to help you in
understanding written and spoken form of descriptive text. It also
provides discussion forum as a media in which you can share your
own ideas related to the topic given. In the third part, it is followed
by formative assessment to check your comprehension about
descriptive text related to person. In the final section, reflective
summary is provided where you can reflect the result of your
learning process using this module.

Attitude

To uphold and apply religious values, moral values, ethical values,


personal and social values, in this case being respectful to
others(treating people with courtesy, politeness, and kindness),
showing appreciation to others‘ opinions and suggestions, and
listening to what others have to says/writes wisely before expressing
your own viewpoints.

Knowledge

c. To analyze the descriptive texts in regard to the text structures, by


showing the evidence from the texts (expression, sentences,

a. Definition
The Descriptive Text is a text that explains about what a person is
like.. It is about sensory experience, how something looks, sounds,
shapes. Mostly it is about visual experience, but description also
deals with other kinds of perception. It can be said that the
descriptive text is a meaningful text that describes particular
person.

b. Social Function
 Information about a particular entity by describing its
features, history, and special characteristics.
 Information about person by describing physical attributes,
behaviors, uses, etc.

c. Generic Structure

The generic structure of this text consists of :

 Identification or general statements. It introduces


or identifies specific object (a person).
 Descriptions: The parts of a text describe the object
characteristics, appeareances, personality, habits or
qualities (Derewianka, 2004; Butt et.al., 2000;
Gerot & Wignell, 1994; Knapp and Watkins,
2005, p. 149; Emilia & Christie, 2013)

Make a collection of descriptions of people from newspapers
and magazines. Court/crime reports, celebrity and gossip
pages, and the personal columns where people are seeking
partners are good places to start!

d. Language Features

describe appearance or qualities and parts or functions
of phenomena;
4. Use action verbs or material process and behavioral
process in giving additional description regarding action
and behavior done by the participants in text;
5. Use mental verb or mental process when describing feelings;
6. Use nominal group frequently to describe;
7. Use adjective and adverbs to add information to
nouns and add information to verbs to provide more
detailed description about the topic;
8. Use adverbial phrases to add more information about
manner, place, or time and sometimes realized in
embedded clause which functions as circumstances
