SPECIFICATION FOR HEAT TRACING Petro-Energy
1.0 SCOPE
This specification covers the minimum requirements for design, installation and
materials for external heat tracing of piping, instrumentation and equipment with hot oil
as heating medium, primarily for reducing viscidity purposes. The number and sizes of
tracers indicated are to maintain process temperatures only. Tracers needed for
increasing process fluid temperatures must be individually evaluated to establish tracing
requirements.
2.1 Contractor shall meet or exceed the requirements of the latest edition of the following
codes, regulations and standards, except as superseded herein. In cases where more than
one code, regulation or standard apply to the same condition, the most stringent shall be
followed. In the event of a conflict between this specification and other specifications or
correspondence, the OWNER shall be consulted and a ruling, in writing, shall be obtained
before any work is started.
• Regulations, Codes and Statutes of the Authorities having jurisdiction in the location of
installation.
2.2 The following General Specifications shall be used in conjunction with this specification
where applicable:
• GEN-SPC-MEQ-8150 Insulation
2.3 Some requirements in this specification may be modified by specific requirements in the
purchase specification. In case of conflict, the specific requirements supersede this
specification.

SPECIFICATION FOR HEAT TRACING Petro-Energy
2.4 Any deviation from this specification must be approved, in writing, by OWNER. Such
written approval must be obtained prior to the commencement of any work which would
constitute such a deviation.
3.0 GENERAL
3.1 The flow diagrams and the piping assembly drawings show the extent of the heat tracing.
The heat tracing isometrics (when provided) show the routing (layout) and connections
for the system.
3.2 Minimum Ambient Design Temperature for the plant unless specifically indicated
otherwise shall be assumed to be 00C.
• Liquids and solutions which form crystals or which have a pour or freeze point
above minimum ambient design temperature and are not otherwise enclosed or
heated.
• Process vessels containing fluids which can congeal at minimum ambient design
temperature during dormant periods shall be insulated and traced as and where
indicated of P&ID's.
3.4 Instrumentation
Instruments, instrument lines and level glasses which contain liquids which boil at
heat-tracing temperature shall be separated by spacers.

4.0 DESIGN
The design of hot oil tracing systems must provide for the effective balancing of the
tracing systems. Acceptable methods of doing this are by using globe valves, fixed
orifices, or thermostatic valves. The temperature drop along each tracer will be limited to
280C. The lengths and sizes of the tracers are additionally limited by the maximum hot
oil temperature. The following tables are based on 2800C maximum hot oil temperature
and a 280C temperature drop. If the actual job conditions differ significantly from this, the
tables must be revised to cover the specific conditions.
TRACER SIZING
5.0 MATERIALS
For tracing, no pipe, valves or fittings of copper, brass, aluminum, cast iron, modular iron
or semi-steel shall be used.
Piping shall comply with the requirements of General Specification 5050 Piping
Classification A01.

6.0 INSTALLATION
6.1 On Piping
Tracers should generally be located at the 4 o'clock position on horizontal piping. When
two tracers are used, they should be located at the 4 and 8 o'clock positions, with a third,
if required, placed at the 6 o'clock position.
Fasten the tracers to piping at 3 foot intervals with galvanized steel wire. Tubing may be
affixed to irregularly contoured surfaces such as valves and instruments with tie-wire.
Each tracer is to be equipped with a tagged block valve at each end of the tracer run.
Tags are to be stainless steel and die-stamped with the number of the tracer.
On lines and services where local overheating of the process fluid must be avoided,
space the tracer away from the line with two layers of fiberglass tape. On all traced
systems, trace up to and including the first block valve of all branch lines which may not
require tracing.
6.2 On Valves
Make one wrap of the tracer adjacent to the bonnet flange and one wrap around the
valve body.
6.3 On Instruments
The tracer may be spiral or accordion wrapped, according to the size of the item and
secured in place with wire.
7.1.1 Tubing and pipe bends shall be visually inspected for kinked or flattened sections. All
such sections shall be cut out and replaced.
7.1.2 Tracer attachment shall be checked for freedom of movement towards expansion loops.

SPECIFICATION FOR HEAT TRACING Petro-Energy
7.1.3 Tracer attachment shall be inspected at expansion loops, at equipment breakpoints, and
at other changes of directions where movement of the tracer could damage insulation.
7.1.4 For bonded tracer tubing, contact of tracer with process piping shall be ensured. The
bonding procedure shall be tested and approved by OWNER’s inspector prior to
installation of tracer system.
7.2 The tracer system shall be pressure tested in accordance with the requirements of
General Specification 5025.
