ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS

1. What is one main difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells?

The primary difference between prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells

is that eukaryotic cells have a nucleus, which stores the DNA or the genetic
material for the cell. Prokaryotic cells do not have a nucleus, instead their
genetic material or the DNA of the cell is bundled together in the nucleoid,
which is an irregularly shaped region.
2. Give an example of a prokaryotic organism.

One of the most common prokaryotes are bacteria, they are present in
many places and are even observed in the human body, mostly found in the
digestive system, in which they aid in digesting food. A specific example of
bacteria is the Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota that reaches the intestine
live and helps build immunity and improve digestion.

3. What is an organelle? Give three examples.

A cell organelle is a structure inside the cell that has its own specific
purpose or function to maintain the functionality of the cell; it could be
compared to the organs of the human body.

Three examples of cell organelles:

1. Nucleus - responsible for the storage of the genetic material or the DNA.
2. Ribosome – involved and responsible for the manufacturing or
production of proteins.
3. Cytoskeleton- helps maintain the overall shape of the cell, and is
responsible for holding the nucleus in space as well as supporting the
other cell contents.
4. Describe the Nucleus. What can be found inside the Nucleus?

The Nucleus could be considered as the most important organelle in a

cell, it contains the genetic material or the DNA of the cell. It is considered
as the most important organelle as it directs or controls the different
activities of the cell. The DNA or the genetic material of the cell has the
main function of storing genetic information; it contains the instructions on
how to create the different components of the cell.

5. Are viruses alive? Discuss why or why not.

It is considered that viruses are nonliving things, when we look at

different criteria to see if something is alive, such as living things having
cells, living things reproduce they fail to pass these standards. Viruses do not
have cells; they only have a protein coat that stores their genetic material.
When talking about the reproduction of a virus, viruses unlike cells, cannot
make a copy of their own genetic material, instead use a living host to create
more of it, viruses do not possess the tools to replicate their genetic material
by themselves.
