[a] 30 [b] 45 [c] 60 [d] 75
(v) The design of cantilever and anchored sheet pile walls is based on the:
[a] Weight [b] Active thrust [c] Passive thrust [d] Length of Sheet Pile Wall
(vi) An excavation is made for a foundation trench in a clayey soil having c = 40 kN/m2, ø = 0o and γ =
20 kN/m3. The depth of potential crack and unsupported excavation are:

rest, at the base of the wall in kN/m2 will be
[a] 40 [b] 60 [c] 80 [d] 120

Descriptive Questions:

1. What are various types of lateral earth pressures on retaining wall? How will you determine
these in cohesive and cohesionless soils?
2. Why does the Rankine’s theory of earth pressures give misleading results of lateral earth
pressure on retaining wall? Explain in brief.
3. What are the major differences between Rankine’s and Coulomb’s theories of lateral earth
pressures?
4. Determine the magnitude and position of resultant active earth pressure on the retaining wall
as given below.
c = 50 kN/m2
3.0 m  = 32o, γ = 17 kN/m3
WT
 = 20 , γsat = 24 kN/m3
o

6.0 m c = 0.0 kN/m2

5. Explain in brief the design procedure of cantilever and anchored sheet pile walls.

6. Determine the minimum and safe depth of cantilever sheet pile wall from the Figure as given
below

7. Determine the minimum and safe depth of cantilever sheet pile wall from the Figure as given
below

8. An anchored sheet pile wall is to support a mass of cohesionless soil up to a height of 8 m

above the dredge level. The anchor ties are at 1 m below the top and at a horizontal spacing of
1.25 m center to center. The unit weight of the soil is 19 kN/m3 and  = 30o. Find the
minimum and safe depth of anchored sheet pile wall required theoretically, neglecting friction
on the surface of the pile. Also find diameter of tie rod if allowable stress of tie rod is 100
N/mm2.

9. The pressure surface (back side) of the 12 m high retaining wall is inclined with
vertical at an angle of 10o and the backfill surface is inclined with horizontal at an
angle of 15o. The backfill is a non-cohesive soil having unit weight of 18.0 kN/m3 and
angle of internal friction (shearing resistance) of 35o. The angle of wall friction is
estimated to be 20o. Compute the maximum active and passive thrust on the wall and
also find the line of action of lateral earth pressures. Using Coulomb’s theory of earth
pressure

10. The pressure surface of 12 m high retaining wall is inclined with vertical at an angle
of 10o. The backfill is a non-cohesive soil with a unit weight of 18.0 kN/m3 and angle
of internal friction 30o. The angle of inclination of backfill is 15o and the angle of
wall friction is estimated to be 20o. Compute the maximum active thrust on the wall
and show the position of critical slip plain, using Rebhann’s and Culmann’s
graphical construction method.
