- The exact copy had been received by Fr.

Balaguer in the evening immediately preceding Rizal's

execution.

- Fr. Pi's copy of Rizal's retraction has the same text as that of Fr. Balaguer's "exact" copy but follows the
paragraphing of the texts of Rizal's retraction in the Manila newspapers.

In order to marry Josephine, Rizal wrote with the help of a priest a form of retraction to be approved by
the Bishop of Cebu.

-This incident was revealed by Fr. Antonio Obach to his friend Prof. Austin Craig who wrote down in
1912.

the priest had told him; "The document (the retraction), inclosed with the priest's letter, was ready for
the mail when Rizal came hurrying I to reclaim it." Rizal realized (perhaps, rather late) that he had
written and given to a priest what the friars had been trying by all means to get from him.

- Surely whether Rizal died a Catholic or an apostate adds or detracts nothing from his greatness as a
Filipino. It is because of what he did and what he was that we revere Rizal.

Catholic or Mason, Rizal is still Rizal: the hero who courted death “to prove to those who deny our
patriotism that we know how to die for our duty and our beliefs”

- retraction letter

- A retraction letter is a document that withdraws, or rescinds, a previous claim.

- A retraction letter is most often used to retract a preliminary notice or a notice of intent to lien.

Did Rizal make the retraction?

- After making other minor changes to the draft, Rizal signed his retraction letter before midnight. Fr.
Balaguer handed it over to Fr. Pi, who in turn submitted it to Archbishop Bernardino Nozaleda (Guerrero
1971, 459).

Some even reprinted the retraction letter that he wrote, in order to prove that he did indeed
die a Catholic. They also mentioned the Jesuit priests and other colonial officials who
witnessed this controversial act by Rizal. ... The Jesuits he sent to Rizal's detention cell were
Frs.

 Maybe he simply retracted because he was about to die and his judgement
wasn't clear anymore, he was afraid of dying and all that it implies and he
sought hope, something to cling onto as he walked to his end. In that case
this words aren't any more meaningful than any insult you might say out of
rage but you don't mean.

his retraction does change the way you should look at his writings, but not the validity of
them, it just adds insight into the way a leader acts and writes and the existance of doubts
in Rizal's writings on Catholicism

To retract will go against everything Rizal believed in. But because of love, he may have
done it. Don’t discount love. Josephine Bracken wanted to be recognized as Rizal’s
legitimate widow. So they have to be married before Rizal dies. The Jesuit friars wanted Rizal
to retract first before they do the ritual. Well, by some accounts, they were married, so it’s
possible.

If Rizal retracted, they would have shown it to the Spanish authorities to stop Rizal’s
execution. So either the authorities have already decided to kill Rizal no matter what, or
there was no retraction in the first place, or the church simply wanted Rizal to be killed,
retraction or not. After all, heresy and deviation from the Catholic faith should not be
tolerated under any circumstances.

Rizal was executed anyway.

History did not change because of Rizal’s retraction, if there ever was. It was simply so
insignificant compared to Rizal’s role in our history. It is only the Catholic church that makes
a big thing out of it. Nobody else cares.
Saint Pio (Pius) of Pietrelchina was a Capuchin Catholic priest from Italy, who is venerated as a saint.
During his lifetime, he became known for bearing the stigmata (wounds of Christ). ... When he first
applied to join the Capuchin order, he was told he had to go and gain more education first.

Born: May 25, 1887, Pietrelcina

Nationality: Italy

Until now it still debated by the scholars as o its authenticity. It was supposed to have been signed by
Jose Rizal moments before his death. There were many witnesses, most of them Jesuits. The document
only surfaced for public viewing on May 13, 1935

Retraction of rizal true?

- On the day of the execution, the Spaniards published an article in all the local papers, according to
which, Rizal, in a written declaration made by him on the day of his death, retracted all his writings and
deeds and proclaims himself to be a repentant sinner and a loyal Spaniard.
