Metacognition:
Write a short paragraph summarizing your own understanding of literary criticism.
Literary criticism is reading beyond texts. We do not stop by just reading merely what is written,
but we dig deeper, we understand what's within. We come up with the literary's underlying
connotations and denotations to derive a meaningful extraction of its hidden intention. Literary
criticism is treasure hunting. Hunters wouldn't be able to find the chest of treasures if they would
unvet the map. The same goes for the concept of literary criticism, we get to grasp the very
essence of a text through scrutinizing every detail that it entails. If we just rely on what is written,
literary criticism would not take place.

Application:
Decide which statement is useful to you as you apply it in your own critique and serve as your
guide in doing literary analysis in the coming lessons. Explain in a short-paragraph why you
chose this statement.
1. Literary criticism enables us to study, discuss, compare and apply the literary theory.
2. Literary criticism asks what literature is, what it does, what it is worth.
3. Literary criticism helps us to understand what is important about the text – its context,
social, and historical aspects.
4. Literary criticism helps us understand the relationship between authors, readers, and
texts.
5. Literary criticism draws philosophical discussions, for its methods and goals, from literary
theory whose concepts and principles are being applied in the process.
6. Literary criticism enables us to practice the art of judging or commenting on the qualities
and character of literary works.
"Literary criticism helps us to understand what is important about the text – its context, social,
and historical aspects."
This statement piqued me quite the most among all the given statements. It surmises the notion
that literary criticism is a beacon in understanding the essentials of a text. Furthermore, literary
criticism lays the knowledge needed in dissecting the prime aspects of literature including the
contextual assertion, social standpoint, and its historical implications. These things would be
useful to my case as in applying it in my own critique and will fulfill as my guide in doing literary
analysis in the coming lessons.
Metacognition:
Can you express your expectations of the course? Also, mention one particular problem that
you think you need to prepare for.
I would be expecting a profound and thorough undertaking of all the lessons stipulated in the
course. Despite, the new normal of learning, I still am yearning for a comprehensive
understanding of our subject. I am looking forward to being clarified with the concepts of literary
criticism and everything that it entails which would help me in becoming an effective language
educator shortly. If there is one problem I think would come along my way, it would be the
instability of the internet. But the rest, I guess it would be of personal learning struggles.
