Used Thread Inspection / Repair Procedures

1 Scope
This procedure will replace the QM00-001 (Used Thread Inspection Procedure), the RP00-002
(Used thread Cleaning Procedure) and the RP00-001 (Used thread Repair procedure)
It must be used for the inspection and rework of all IF, Reg, NC, H90, OH, PAC, SH, SL H90, FH, XH, NC
mod., Reg mod., CDP, BH-HT, and all other Baker Hughes threads.
For API 8-round, 10-round, and Line-pipe threads use document MFG-CMP-DQRM-I108.
It must not be used for the inspection of BH-T2 threads! Use QP200-006 BH-T2 Thread Inspection
and Rework Procedure instead.
This procedure is valid for the quality inspection of Baker Hughes tools with the above mentioned
thread connection.

The inspection and acceptance criteria given in this procedure do not

fully comply with those of the API Spec. 7-1, API Spec. 7-2, API RP 7G, ISO
10424-1, ISO 10424-2, Fearnly Procter NS2 or TH HILL DS1 Volume 3.
Note 1
Be sure to use the correct inspection standard required by the customer
contract if the acceptance criteria of this standard are not accepted by
the customer.

All tools with premium threads which have been sent to a customer site
and subsequently returned to Baker Hughes AMO location torqued or to
Note 2 be torqued again must have the threads inspected by a qualified
inspector for the respective threads prior to sending the equipment out
on another job. In case of any repair or re-cut, authorized or certified
machine shop shall be utilized. Manufacturing quality can be contacted
for guidance on relevant thread type’s requirements.

2 Inspection
Due to wear, corrosion and fatigue, defects can occur on thread connections, which can result in
failure of the thread connection.

3 Accomplishment
This procedure is intended to standardize your work by means of the corresponding inspection
and rework instructions and reports.
Carry out the inspection strictly according to this instruction! The individual steps are shown
briefly in this document and have to be carried out in the given order!
After having completed the thread inspection, the Thread Inspection Report has to be filled out.
If you should find any errors in this instruction during the assembly or in the report, or if you want
to suggest improvements or become aware of required changes to this document, please follow
the Document Change Request (DCR) process on Baker Hughes Operating System (BHOS).

9.4 Geometrical Inspection

Used connection geometrical inspection:
 Deformation / Wear of thread profile
 Use the applicable thread profile gage to check the profile for deformation and / or
wear. Place the profile gage at 2 inch distance away from the first thread lead. Repeat
the check at least 3 times around the circumference.

Used Thread Inspection / Repair Procedures

 The profile gage shall mesh with the thread load and stab flanks so that no light is
visible at any of the thread flanks or roots. Uniform flank wear estimated to be less
than 0.1 mm (0.004 inch) is permissible.
 If the profile gage indicates that the pin is stretched, Pin lead measurement is
required. Measure the Pin thread over a 2 lead interval beginning at the first full-
depth thread nearest the shoulder. Pin stretch (elongation) shall not exceed 0.15
mm (0.006 inch) over the 2 inch length.
 Thread profile wear shall not exceed 0,1 mm (0.004 inch)
 Any thread profile deformation is cause for rejection.

Cold worked (CW) connections may show an acceptable light

Note gap at the thread root in the range of 0,05 mm - 0,12 mm (0.002 -
0.004 inch).

 Deformation of thread shoulder (Shoulder Flatness)

Use a straight edge to check the thread shoulder for plastic deformation.
Repeat the check at least 3 times around the circumference.
 Any visible gap more than 0.3 mm (0.012 inch) shall be cause for rejection. Use a
feeler gage to check the gap.
 Box Belling (Swelling)
Use the applicable (flat) cone gage and push it into the connection. Align the gage to the
center line of the body. Jiggle (shake) the gage to check for a possible gap between gage
and connection.
 Any gap between connection and gage shall be measured using a feeler gage.
Any gap greater than 0.4 mm (0.016 inch) shall be cause for rejection.
Alternative to the use of flat cone gages (which is the preferred inspection method!) box
belling can be checked with a straight edge. Place a straight edge along the longitudinal axis
of the box tool joint. If a visible light gap exists between the straightedge and the tool joint, the
OD must be measured using calipers. Compare the OD at the bevel to the OD 50 mm (2 inch),
+/- 12.5 mm (1/2 inch) away from the bevel.
 If the OD at the bevel is greater by 0.8 mm (1/32 inch) or more, the connection shall
be rejected.

9.5 Dimensional Inspection

9.5.1 Post Step 1 Rework Dimensional Inspection

Inspect reworked areas to comply with the given maximum rework dimensions given in this
procedure. In doubt the use of a mold could help to "measure" the size of reworked areas.
Use the applicable thread drawing from Table 2, the applicable tool drawing or the given
rework dimensions in this procedure for reference.

9.5.2 Post Step 2 Dimensional Inspection

Inspect reworked areas to comply with the given maximum rework dimensions, the
applicable thread drawing from Table 2 or the applicable tool drawing.

9.5.3 Post Step 3 Dimensional Inspection

Inspect reworked areas to comply with the applicable thread drawing from Table 2 or the
applicable tool drawing.

9.6 Non Destructive Testing (NDT)

Magnetic Particle Testing (MT) per QP100-001 and Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT) per QP100-003
must be used.
If a relevant indication is detected, the connection has to be labeled following the "Inspection
Status / Color Coding" on Page 4 and dispositioned according to the applicable rework step (1, 2,
3) of this procedure, the individual tool Repair Procedure and/or respective Locations Material
Review Board.
Perform PT inspection prior to the shot peen and cold
working processes as these processes could close small
surface imperfections.
NOTICE
When using the PT inspection method, special care must be
taken to fully apply the developer to the thread root of the
box connection.

Areas to be inspected with MT or PT are marked with a dashed line ( _ _ _ ). See Figure 7 below
for reference.
The Box OD marked with an additional dashed / dotted line ( _ . _ . _ ) should be MT or PT
inspected if possible. However due to tong marks it could be difficult to evaluate the
inspection. In this case a good visual inspection may be used as an alternative.

Thread rework can be classified in 3 general steps:

Uncontrolled when printed or transmitted electronically Page 21 of 45 Baker Hughes – Confidential

QP200-007 Rev: U
Effective Date: 21 Apr 2020
Used Thread Inspection / Repair Procedures

10.1 Step 1 Rework

Local spot repair (grinding / polishing)
Single areas can be repaired by grinding. Follow the inspection limits of section "Visual
Connection Inspection And Acceptance Criteria" on Page 17.

10.2 Step 2 Rework

Thread rework using the Baker Hughes repair limits from Page 21 and following.

Note Step 1 rework can be applied in addition!

Pin thread profile and shoulder rework is permissible within the limits given in Table 3. If cold
working is required the cold working shall start at the large end with closest possible distance to
the thread shoulder.

10.3 Step 3 Rework

Complete thread re-cut.
Always use the applicable thread drawings from Table 2 on Page 8 or the applicable tool drawing.
Some connections require Cold Working per MPM 200. It can be identified on the thread drawing
the tool related drawing or the applicable standard (DS 1, NS 2, etc.) if a connection needs to be
cold worked. In this case always use the applicable "CW Preparation Contour" drawing for the
preparation before the cold working is applied! The CW Preparation Contour drawing number
can be found on the thread drawing in the thread details area or in Table 2.

11 General Rework Remarks

The given Rework Limits are exemptions, all other dimensions

must be taken from the related standard thread drawing from
Note Table 2 the related thread profile drawing from Table 2, the
applicable tool related drawing or the applicable tool related
inspection manuals.

 Refer to the applicable tool related manufacturing drawings or the applicable

standard (DS 1, NS 2, etc.) for further requirements (i.e. additional features like Pressure
Plugs, shot peen per MPM 219, phosphating per MPM 301, cold working per MPM 200,
copper coating per MPM 302, etc.)!
 General design requirements can be found in the Drill Stem Design Specifications
Manual 10000006535.
 Stand-off values given in the thread drawings from Table 2 are to be considered as the
value measured before any cold working and shot-peen operation.
 Alignment: To ensure concentricity during the repair operation, verify that the total
indicator reading (TIR) of angular misalignment between the thread axis and tool
design axis does not exceed 0.0025 mm per 25.4 mm (0.001 inches per inch) of
projected axis. The design axis shall be assumed to intersect the thread axis at the
plane of the tool joint shoulder.

12 Baker Hughes Rework Tolerances for API Connections

The following rework tolerances are to be used only in case when

no specific inspection standard like DS 1, NS 2, API RP7G or others
Note
are requested by the customer and if the customer accepts the
Baker Hughes inspection / rework limits.

12.1 Ladder Tables Examples (BH Rework Tolerances)

Following are some examples how to use the BH Ladder tables for the calculation of the
acceptable Inner Diameter (d) / Stress Relieve Groove (D) Diameter combination.
The ladder tables are to be used always from one given value and will then give you the
corresponding 2nd value. For example: If you have measured the SRG diameter (D) then
you take that value and look for the max. Inner Diameter (d). The "greyed out" areas of the
tables indicate the areas of out of tolerance values.
Example 1:
Q: You measured the SRG Diameter (D) with
136,5 mm.
What is the acceptable Inner Diameter
(d)?
A: The acceptable Inner Diameter (d) is max.
67,5 mm or smaller but not less than 63,5
mm.

136,1 mm.
What is the acceptable Inner Diameter
(d)?
A: The acceptable Inner Diameter (d) is max.
76,0 mm or less but not less than 71,4 mm.

Example 3:
Q: You measured the Inner Diameter (d) with
67,5 mm.
What is the acceptable SRG Diameter (D)?
A: The acceptable SRG Diameter (D) is 135,8
mm or greater but not more than 137,7 mm.

rework is allowed within the limit as stated for the stress relief groove width L5. The entire
thread has to be machined as followed:
HT10; H12; HT30; HT40 Threads
i. Rework inner shoulder (L5)
ii. Rework the cone (small diameter of the box thread) to the Stand In as
stated for L6. Stand In refers to the blank cone gage
iii. Rework box length (inner shoulder) according to L4
iv. Use a non topping threading insert to rework the thread to full depth. Use
profile gage to check thread depth. During this operation no further
machining of the cone is allowed.
HT60 Threads
v. Rework HT60 thread as conducted for standard threads, refer to Table 5
(L5) for maximum rework length.
