This document outlines topics and sources for a debate activity on controversial issues in Philippine history. Four debate issues are provided: the site of the first mass in the Philippines, the cause of the 1872 Cavite Mutiny, whether Jose Rizal retracted statements about the Catholic Church, and the location of the Cry of Balintawak that sparked the Philippine Revolution. Primary and secondary sources on each topic are recommended. Guidelines for the debate process are also given, including short introductions by each group, a presentation and question/answer period, and conclusions. Participation by all group members is expected, and cameras must be on during the debate.

Debate Process
1. A very short Introduction should be done first by each group ( Group A then Group
B)
2. Presentation of facts (Group A then Group B)
3. After each group had presented their facts, each group now will ask three questions
to be immediately answered by the other group. ( Group A will ask question to be
answered by group B and then Group B will ask 3 questions to answered by Group A)
4. Conclusions will be given after the question and answer. (Group A then Group B)
This is not a competition. This serves as an exercise of analytical skills and ability to
confidently present an argumentation with sufficient justification.
All members of each side must participate in the debate. In the absence of a member
during the day of the presentation, somebody in the group should take the position of the
absent member so as not to interrupt the flow of the debate. Member who is absent will
be given a lower grade or no grade.
Do not read your materials. You may bring some brief notes, but you may not read them.
All members of the group must have to turn on the camera during the duration of the debate.
