Assignment 1: Social Problem Report: BUS 10012 Innovative Business Practice
Section 1: Introduction Design Thinking for Social Entrepreneurship and Social Problems
In the first stage, designers need to observe that the target audience has an in-depth
understanding of how they interact with the product or problem (Emily 2020). Observation must
have empathy and judgment because need interview, surveys, and observation meetings are
required. Based on your observations collected in the first phase, in the second stage, a clearly
defined problem statement. Consider the difficulties and needs your consumers are facing. The
next step is brainstorming on how to solve the problem you've identified in mind. These
meetings can be conceived in a group. The most important is to generate a lot of different ideas
and potential solutions. It is because the conception stage makes people think outside the box and
explore new perspectives. The prototype stage is the stage of ideas into practical solutions. The
prototype's point is to provide a concrete version of the concept to understand how consumers
will accept it. The last test stage is the stage that collection of your feedback (Graham 2021).
Design thinking allows consumers to create permanent value. It is because it can help to
solve the specific needs of consumers. Design thinking can discover and help consumers who
have never thought of pain points before, and these pain points may not even be known. Design
thinking also looks at the problem from a different perspective, so once found that these pain
points and issues, design thinking can provide the perfect solution (Graham 2021).
In this report, the social problem that I selected is unemployment. Unemployment occurs
when people who do not have a job are actively looking for work. It also calls joblessness.
Other than that, social entrepreneurship is to build structures that contain social
cooperation, people-oriented innovation, visualization of ideas, and social policies determined
characteristics. The characteristics of these building structures coincide with the development
process of design thinking. We can compare the suitability between entrepreneurship and design
thinking methodology and then adopt these integrated project design methods. Entrepreneurship
is a concept of self-employment, which enables individuals to work and involve others to
develop business. Excellent entrepreneurial spirit can allow people to create a very favorable and
mutually suitable environment for enterprises and employees, thereby significantly reducing the
unwillingness to find employment. Establishing multisector partnerships is one of the
entrepreneurial spirits that can help successfully resolve unemployment. Onboarding partners
from multiple and different market sectors will assist in mutually beneficial cooperation between
the two parties. As business partners also expand the company's work scope, this can also further
increase employment opportunities. Attracting more talents can help the company build a
successful business (Aniketh 2019).
Section 2: Personal awareness and Connection with Social Problem
The specific issue of the social problem that I choose is unemployment among youth
global. In recent decades, the government aware of young people's high unemployment rate
could have a huge impact on the worldwide economy. Significantly young people who are
unemployed for a long time may harm future income and employment prospects (Julta 2020).
Unemployment refers to an individual who can work and actively seeks a job but cannot find a
suitable job. The group, including those of labor, is working, but there is no practical work.
Unemployment is often used to measure the economic situation, especially in times of economic
recession, the economy typically experiences high unemployment rates. It also will forward
many reasons, consequences, and solutions for unemployment.
According to the Global Employment Trends for Youth 2020 (GET youth 2020), the global
youth unemployment rate is 13.7%. In 2012, the youth unemployment rate in Asia and the
Pacific had been rising, and it is expected to be 14.1% in 2020. Before 2018, the youth
unemployment rate in the region was lower than the global average.
Unemployment coincides with Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth – Being
under UN Sustainable Development Goals that promote sustainable and inclusive economic
growth, creating employment and decent work for all to improve living standards. According to
the Sustainable Development Goals (2020), COVID-19 threatening the global economy and
caused many people to lose their jobs. The International Labor Organization (ILO) considers that
half of the worldwide workforce risk losing their livelihoods with the increasing number of
unemployed. Global youth unemployment rate is about 13%, which is three times the adult
unemployment rate. Therefore, if there is no urgent investment in education and skills training,
the rapidly growing young population will largely face the risk of unemployment (Unicef 2020).
The personal strength and skills that can help address the unemployment social
problem are maintaining a learning mindset. It is necessary to be unemployed for a while before
the next job because they will have a lot of time to improve your knowledge and professional
skills required for future courses such as leadership skills or presentation skills activities. They
can also participate in courses to enhance their learning skills (Alena 2018). It is because only
through a continuous desire to learn and improve ourselves in order to allow the company to
consider you to be a valuable person and hire you. This effect will significantly reduce the tide of
unemployment (Indeed 2020).
Section 3: Exploring empathy and developing valuable insights

Jamie Gilliam was 22 years old, and he was a young jobseeker now. He graduated with a
first-class politics degree from King’s College London last year. He was applying and looking
for a job that suited his degree, an administrative position such as civil servants that can give him
some experience. Unfortunately, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, he was rejected by any
company. He has applied for about 200 jobs, so no company is willing to hire him. A lot of
young people have been particularly hard of affected by this pandemic that will impact the labor
market. After reading this report, I feel like compassion for Jamie Gilliam because he is
encountered with lousy timing that is encountered pandemic. This incident will remind me to
have some required skills in the workplace, such as communication skills and some occupational
experience, and it will help your get the jobs, especially you are looking for jobs.
3.2 Customer Profile Map of Jamie Gilliam
Jamie Gilliam Customer Profile Map was built based on her story that is shown in the
diagram. He was a victim of youth unemployment, the customer jobs for the functional jobs is to
offer equal unemployment opportunity for those youth who are graduate as they are suffering
from seeking a job, can create networking events to meet employers/recruiters and provide
training or attend the course to acquire new skills in the workplace. Other than that, don’t forget
to continuously update the resume to leave a good impression on the employer/recruiters. In
pain, people who are suffering unemployment will get stuck in a career or jeopardizing. They
need money to maintain a livelihood and repay the loans such as PTPTN. Otherwise, they cannot
survive. Therefore, it will cause them to feel depressed and anxious. Other than that, they will
face ridicule and be looked down upon by people when they are unemployment. For the gains,
the unemployed people will receive unemployment benefits as it provides supplemental income
to help pay the necessary cost of living. When they are constantly seeking a job, they will have
more past experiences and more confident job seeking to assist other youth when he is looking
for a job. Other than that, it can relax yourself through this unemployment time as it will let them
keep a good attitude and mentality when looking for following jobs.
3.3 Empathy Map for Jamie Gilliam
Sources: Adapted From https://www.bbc.com/news/business-56025926
The first empathy map and personals for Jamie Gilliam was based on his challenges: he
cannot find a job during the pandemic period. It is because young people are most affected by the
pandemic and are also prone to be fired and unable to find work. However, through this
demonstration and news report, the government will allow James Gilliam to get a job. In this
way, the government will wake up to the career opportunities that will be developed for more
young people.
3.4 Empathy Map for Annabelle Smith

The second empathy map and personal for Annabelle Smith at the age of 29, she suffered
three times redundant less than 12 months during the pandemic. Apart from that, she was saddled
with debt, and wages also fell because of a pandemic. During her leave, she was paid 80% of her
salary and then laid off without compensation. In March, she lost his job as marketing manager
and then resigned from a real estate company in May as she is a property consultant, and finally
as an assistant manager at the stadium in December.
3.5 Empathy Map for Sarah Groome
Sources: Adapted From https://www.bbc.com/news/business-55177848
The third empathy and personals for Sarah Groome, at the age of 35, lives in Pennsylvania.
She working as an event manager for a large football team in Pennsylvania. But when
coronavirus struck, she lost the job. She received unemployment benefits from the government in
six months-but as the program comes to an end, it will significantly reduce expenditures. She has
applied more than 100 jobs and accepted an interview. She feels scared because she is not sure
that a company will hire her. But fortunately, she found a temporary part-time retail job, earn
about $ 100 a week, and slowly through the savings to pay debts and living expenses.
Section 4: Problem Statement
The research and analysis for the previous sections are completed, I concluded that
unemployment among youth does not only affect the youth directly. However, it also affects the
surrounding in terms of social-economy which is persons can’t find a job or made redundant by
the company during the Covid-19 period. While I was collecting the data, facts, statistics and
analyze the cause, effects of unemployment among youth, and noticed that the persons who lost
their job during the Covid-19 period were affecting the male and female of all ages, not only
youth. Therefore, the problem statement will be:
“How might we innovate solution for those who lost their job in Covid-19 in order to get
employed?”
The problem with this question is who lost their job in Covid-19. This problem is very
urgent because the COVID-19 crisis is a global crisis that has hurt countries of all income levels.
It has brought millions of people into unemployment, working poverty, and underemployment. It
will lead to a sharp rise in the number of unemployed persons and bring serious economic,
social, and psychological consequences. Many people suddenly do not have a job, mainly
because they were fired by the company with some form of termination payment or required to
take indefinite unpaid leave or be fired directly. Therefore, it will be a financial challenge for
many people who suddenly lose their income. Still, it also brings tremendous pressure and
psychological difficulties for those who lost their job in a pandemic.
