Nitrogen Displacement Calculation e

Minimum Volume of N2 required to displace fluid level to end of tubing

Hole is full with 9.6 ppg Brine.

1. Volume
Tubing Volume = 38 Bbls

2. Average Pressure (Avg. Pr.)

BHP + WHP
Avg. Pr. = 2

BHP = Depth x Density x 0.052

BHP = 10000 ft x 9.6 ppg x 0.052
BHP = 4992 psi (Use 5000 psi)

WHP = 3800 psi (see below)

5000 + 3800
Avg.Pr. = ------------------- = 4400 psi
2

For wellhead Pressure (WHP), go to section 315 of your N2 Engineer Handbook You
need Depth and BHP to find WHP.

The WHP due to the column of

N2 is between 4000 psi
and 3750 psi. Choose 3800
psi.

=> WHP = 3800 psi

3. Average Temp. (Avg. Temp.)

BHT + Surf Temp 160 + 80
Avg. Temp = ------------------------ = ------------ = 120 deg. F
2 2

4. Nitrogen Volume Factor (NVF)

Go to section 305 from your N2 Engineer Handbook. You need BHP and BHT to find
SCF/BBI.
Page 305.07: 4400 psi
=> 1302 SCF/BBI
120 deg. F
5. Nitrogen Volume in SCF 6. Nitrogen Volume in gal
1302 SCF/BBI X 38 Bbls = 49476 SCF 49476
----------------- = 531 gals
93.1 SCF/gal

Foam Quality Calculation

Bottom Hole Pressure = BHP

Bottom Hole Temperature = BHT
Foam Quality = FQ

1. Bottom hole Pressure

BHP should be known. Ex: 2500 psi @ 10000ft

2. Choose a choke pressure

Choose a choke pressure of 300 psi as a start.

3. Hydrostatic of column of Foam

BHP - Choke Press. should be Hydrostatic
=> 2500 psi - 300 psi = 2200 psi

4. Find Foam Quality

Go to chart 320.12 and find FQ of column of Foam to balance BHP

The lines cross between the 60 Quality

and 50 Quality line. Find 53
Foam Quality

5. Average Temp.
Take the average between Surface pump temperature and Bottom Hole Temperature.
120 deg F + 260 deg F = 280 deg F/2 = 140 deg F

6. Average Pressure
BHP = 2500 psi
Choke Pressure = 300 psi

2500 + 300
Avg Press = ------------------- = 1400 psi
2

7. Nitrogen Rate and Pump Rate

Go to table 310 and find at 1400 psi and 140 deg F, and 53 HQ the Nitrogen
Requirements per BBI
(150 deg F, 1500 psi, 55 FQ on page 310.09) => 588 SCF/Bbl
At 0.5 BPM fluid rate, pump 0.5 x 588 SCF/BBI = 294 SCF/ min Nitrogen
