Lesson 2: Criteria in Choosing Appropriate Assessment Tools
Answer the following questions.
1. Enumerate and discuss the different assessment methods and tools utilized by
your teacher in elementary and high school.
Answer:
Way back in my elementary days, most of my teachers use flash cards of
alphabet, animals, shapes and numbers then ask us one by one to identify and read out
loud each flash card being shown to us to assess our knowledge about the said topic. In
high school, teachers usually gives us multiple choice pre-test before discussing the
topic to assess us if we have an idea or what we already know about the topic that will
be discuss. Then after the discussion, the teachers will give us multiple choice post-test
to assess if we have gain knowledge about the topic that was discussed.
2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of these assessment methods and
tools? Cite concrete example.
Answer:
For me, the advantage of using flash cards is it triggers the memorization ability
of the students. If the teachers keep on showing and repeating the flash cards to the
students, it will trigger their memorization ability and can identify each flash cards even
if they were shuffled. While the disadvantage of it is when you use flashcards, you're
basically feeding the students brains more and more information. Next one is giving
multiple choice test to students, this will make it easier for the teacher to assess if the
students really understand and gain knowledge from the given topic and it can be used
to evaluate individual students. The disadvantage of it is that multiple choice tests are
difficult to use to evaluate the skills of every students.

Answer: (Conventional Assessment Methods)

When we say conventional assessment these are the assessment approaches

forms of examinations, such as multiple-choice, short answer essays, or constructed
replies, as well as standardized assessments given to all pupils, are some of them.
Some advantages of these assessment are they are easy and it takes less time to
prepare them and at the same time they can be easily administer. They are very easy to
score and the teachers can easily and quickly assess if the students gain knowledge
and learning from the topic that was discussed. And lastly these assessments are
objective, reliable and valid. Aside from the given advantages this type of assessment
also has some disadvantages like students have few opportunities for demonstrating
what they've learned because these assessment are only limited to pencil and paper
test. Another one is the given time to complete the test is fixed and limited which give
the students pressure to complete the test.
