HANNAH AMOR TRAVILLA BS CRIMINOLOGY FIRST YEAR- SET INDIA

1. When you hear the word crime, what comes to your mind?

- An illegal act for which someone can be punished by the government especially, a gross violation of
law. An act that is capable of being followed by criminal proceedings', which provides us with a wide
classification of the term in that the only common element of crime is that previous legal proceedings
have outlined it as such.

2. When someone studies criminology, how do they explain the causes of crime or criminal behavior?

- When someone studies criminology they explain the cause of crime in the main cause of crime like;
Poverty, parental neglect, low self-esteem, and alcohol and drug abuse can be connected to why people
break the law. Some are at greater risk of becoming offenders because of the circumstances into which
they are born.

3. With what should the word criminology be associated? Why?

- Criminology (from Latin crimen, "accusation", and Ancient Greek - logos meaning: "word, reason") is
the study of crime and deviant behavior. Criminologists are the people working and researching the
study of crime and society's response to crime. Criminology is described as a science and is associated
with an academic institution, specifically the law school at the College of France, and it is said to be the
study of criminal law.

4. If you will become a criminologist someday, how will you contribute to your profession? Support
your answer.

- If I will become criminologist someday, I will give the love and kindness as officer. Showing love in my
work makes me work harder meaning I will be a good role model to my junior and also to all people
around me. I will be a good officer who serves the people and the country. Being kind is one of the best
attitudes of a criminologist, the infancy of your patient and respect to other people. Which is very
important nowadays, our kindness and love will take us to loyalty and doing our responsibility as we do
our part not only because we are officer but also we have a voluntarily courage to help one another.

5. Describe criminology and crime in your own words.

- Criminology is the study of crime from a social view. It’s the study of not just crime in general but what
impact crime has on society, the causes of crime and the individuals who commit the crime. The focus of
the study is to determine what makes individuals commit crimes or act in a criminal manner. It also
studies why certain areas have more crimes or how crime affects victims. Anything having to do with
criminals, crimes and crime victims is covered in the study of criminology.

- Crime, the intentional commission of an act usually deemed socially harmful or dangerous and
specifically defined, prohibited, and punishable under criminal law. Crime is connected to society,
because in society there is always a crime. Crime starts with poverty and because of poverty many
people do crime. Crime will never be lost it is the twin of society.

6. What would be your reaction if someone is involved in the commission of a crime? Why would you
react that way?

- As a criminology student if I know that someone is involved in the commission of crime I will report it
already to the police for them to investigate and find that culprit. I know if I will report someone
involved in commission of a crime it will be not hard to a policeman to find the culprit. And by that, in
just a simple way, I help the victim. I will not shut my mouth if I know someone involved in the crime.
Being a future criminologist I should train myself to be brave and fight for justice.
7. Why is there a need to study about crime?

- Crime is present in every society in the world. What differs, however, is the reason behind each
criminal act and what compels individuals to violate the law. Knowing How & Why Crimes Are
Committed Helps Direct Resources. Criminology examines not only which crimes are committed and why
they happen, but where they are committed (i.e. jurisdiction). Understanding which locations are more
likely to attract criminals helps local officials’ direct resources (including police, firefighters, investigators
and financial resources) to target areas in order to prevent and monitor criminal activity.

8. Why do people commit crime?

- According to what I have learned, people commit crimes because of Poverty; because of poverty many
people commit crime. They don’t have enough money to buy their needs and wants in their life. Other
reasons for committing a crime include greed, anger, jealously, revenge, or pride. Some people decide to
commit a crime and carefully plan everything in advance to increase gain and decrease risk. These
people are making choices about their behavior; some even consider a life of crime better than a regular
job, believing crime brings in greater rewards, admiration, and excitement, at least until they are caught.
Others get an adrenaline rush when successfully carrying out a dangerous crime. Others commit crimes
on impulse, out of rage or fear.

9. Is there a difference on how society treats the criminals compared to the victims? Support your
answer.

- Yes, of course there is difference on how society treats criminals and victims. In criminals people look
them as monster in society they put them in jail because of the crime they commit, some people says
they are bad luck in society and they throw bad words to criminals. While in victims they show pity, they
show support and love.

10. What is the importance of a theory?

- They guide and give meaning to what we see. When a researcher investigates and collects information
through observation, the investigator needs a clear idea of what information is important to collect.
Thus, valid theories are validated by research and are a sound basis for practical action. Example in the
goal of criminological theory is to help one gain an understating of crime and criminal justice. Theories
cover the making and the breaking of the law, criminal and deviant behavior, as well as patterns of
criminal activity. Individual theories may be either macro or micro.
