Chapter 2 The System Unit, Processing, and Memory
Chapter 2 The System Unit, Processing, and Memory
Please answer the in the included attachment. The questions are drawn from the current book chapter.
The answers may be found in the book entitled: "Understanding Computers, 16th edition", or using
Internet research.
It is important not to copy and paste or use directly copied material from websites. It is acceptable to
answer the questions with the help of Internet searches, but not to plagiarize the website. Please use
appropriate references that include hyperlinks to the original article if a website is used to help answer
any questions.
Appropriate length submissions should be complete thoughts and full-sentences. Appropriate responses
shall be between 3-5 sentences in length in response for each question. Please include the original
question with the responses. Please note that the response requirement of 3-5 sentences per-answer
does not include the original question. Please submit the responses using an MS Word document in a
.docx file format.
1. Explain the functions of the hardware components commonly found inside the system unit,
such as the CPU, GPU, memory, buses, and expansion cards. The CPU or central processing unit
is the brains of a computer. It carries out the instructions of a computer program. Buses connect
the CPU to internal components and to help expand use to the graphics and sound cards. An
expansion card in computing is a printed circuit board that can be inserted into an expansion
slot of a computer motherboard or backplane to add functionality to a computer system via the
expansion bus. Expansion cards can be used to obtain or expand on features not offered by the
motherboard.
Main memory is a form of immediate access storage also known as primary storage. In
conjunction with the CPU, it allows data to be temporally stored while the CPU runs the
mobile device.
There are two ways to add a peripheral device. First is via a USB connection port located on the
front or side of a computer. Typically used by external hard drives, a mouse and keyboard.
Second is via Bluetooth or Wifi connecting the PC to a local network. Such as printers, servers
3. Describe how the CPU and memory components process program instructions and data.
The control unit does not execute program instructions; rather, it directs other parts of the
system to do so. The control unit must communicate with both the arithmetic/logic unit and
memory. Memory is the part of the computer that holds data and instructions for processing in
4. Name and evaluate several strategies that can be used today for speeding up the operations
of a computer.
The first way to speed up a computer is to change CPU settings in the bios. Commonly called
over-Clocking. Setting the CPU at higher settings but can lead to damage down the line if left at
Second is to remove any unnecessary programs from startup/ background use. Commonly called
bloat wear these programs serve no use but to bog down a CPU.
Another way is to install a SSD (solid-state drive) for a quick startup. Containing only the
