The Philippines' National Service Training Program (NSTP) is a type of service

learning that is defined as the integration of community services into instruction in order
to strengthen students' civic and community responsibilities. (Balmeo et al, 2015). As we
begin our college careers, we are confronted with a variety of subjects, one of which is
the National Service Training Program. The National Service Training Program (NSTP)
is a citizenship course mandated by the government that is required of all Filipino college
students. It aims to increase civic awareness and defense preparedness in young people
by instilling a sense of service and patriotism in them. It is hereby validated that the
government's primary duty is to serve and protect its people; in turn, it is the obligation of
all citizens to defend the security of the Nation, and the government may necessitate each
citizen to render personal, military, or civil service in order to fulfill that duty. It is hereby
validated that the government's primary duty is to serve and protect its people; in turn, it
is the obligation of all citizens to defend the security of the Nation, and the government
may necessitate each citizen to render personal, military, or civil service in order to fulfill
that duty.

As the Bataan Peninsula State University promotes civic consciousness among

young people and develops their physical, moral, spiritual, intellectual, and social well-
being. It will instill patriotism and nationalism in the youth and encourage their
participation in public and civic affairs. The university held an orientation as well as a
discussion about the NSTP. Students, on the other hand, are free to select which program
component they wish to pursue. It is made up of the Civic Welfare Training Service
(CWTS). This program component is intended to provide students with activities that
contribute to the general wellbeing of life of local residents, particularly those developed
to enhance social welfare services. The next service is the Literacy Training Service
(LTS), which trains students to teach literacy and numeracy skills to schoolchildren and
out-of-school youths. The goal is to continue discovering through peer-to-peer
interactions. The Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) is the final component. This
program component is intended to provide students with military education and training
in order to mobilize them for national defense readiness. This is also an opportunity for
young people to see what military life is like and to be encouraged to serve.

The university provided us with information about the components so that we

could learn about them. The history of ROTC was the first topic that was discussed with
us. The Department of Military Science and Tactics (DMST) was formally established at
the University of the Philippines, as stated. It is also stated there that the Commonwealth
Act number one, also known as the National Defense Act, was passed on December 23,
1935, and serves as the legal foundation for the conduct of ROTC instruction. They also
include specific provisions and laws stating that "The Armed Forces of the Philippines is
the protector of the people and the state". The Commonwealth Act Number 1 is also
stated which mean or known as the National Defense Act of 1935 requiring the
compulsory military training for all college students. As we also heard the Executive
Order Number 207, the implementing arm if this Act issued by the president Manuel L.
Quezon to prepare the youth for the defense of the state. According to PD 1706 amended
the Commonwealth Number 1 in 1990 known as the National Service Law which offered
three components National Service Program. It is being implemented by DND, CHED
and DILG. However, because the relevant agencies were not prepared to implement the
CWS and LES components, the MS program was the only one pursued in colleges and
universities. That is the first topic that has been mentioned. The university pushed us to
choose which component we wanted to study. CWTS, ROTC, or LTS are the options. We
have the final say. The university is simply there to guide us and provide us with
information so that we can decide. We, the BPSU students, are extremely fortunate that
this curriculum has been implemented. It is not a competence that everyone possesses.
The instructions have been clearly stated. The three components were also explained in
detail. The university also showed a video and photos of the activities that were projected
back when it was still a face-to-face class. These make me both happy and sad when I
watch them. Thrilled because it looks like a lot of fun doing all of the activities on the
screen, but unfortunately, we can't do anything right now due to the pandemic. But we're
hoping to make it through the school year. And finally, we were introduced to the NSTP
organization. They are the ones who will assist us on our journey. It is now up to us to
make a decision. Whether we go with ROTC, CWTS, or LTS .I decided to pursue CWTS
after hearing its definition; I am very excited about what awaits me, as I value holistic
service to others. I am hoping that the CWTS course will first raise my awareness of the
issues that are arising in the Philippines, particularly those that we are not aware of.
Especially today, we, the youth, must be aware of what is going on in our nation. As Jose
Rizal once said, "we are the key to the future." I'm hoping for a good year this year
because we can't afford to do all of the activities and lessons outside of our homes. My
hopes are high, in the sense that this will serve as a catalyst for change for all of us.
Everyone is hoping for a shift. I believe that if every citizen plays their part in society, the
change we seek is possible. Things that did not occur previously will happen today. I'm
confident that the university will make it easier and more enjoyable. I'm hoping for a
