QUALITY ALERT Quality Alert # 21-010 dt. 13/05/2021

Doc No:-01000/JMC/JMCH20R/QA010

Concern: High Plastic Shrinkage cracks in concrete.

Many a times high shrinkage cracks are observed in Concrete especially exposed concrete with high surface to volume
structures like slab. Some times the cracks are wide enough for heavy leakage in structure and requires grouting / finishing
/ testing checking etc of structure to attend it and respond to customer complains. In some cases , such situation are
taken as a poor Quality product by client and cause financial impacts for the project apart from affecting further activities
on the structure.
Situation Analysis :

Deviations:
 Improper mix design correction or moisture correction.
 Use of high percentage of fine aggregates.
 Improper handling and placing of concrete when volume to surface area ratio is more.
 Over vibration of concrete.
 Improper protection against exposure to sun / wind, temperature .
 Not following early curing procedures.
 Improper plan and execution of pours, such as planning during day under hot sun.
 Improper handling of concreting due to inadequate & untrained manpower.
 Over troweling of concrete surfaces.
 Improper slump of concrete.

Learnings:
 Moisture correction in concrete shall be done daily for operating Batching plant and it shall be ensured that no
excess water is being allowed in concrete at any stage during production , transportation , pumping , placement
or finishing of concrete. Special care shall be taken in rainy seasons and protection measure shall be there for rain
water mixing in concrete.

This alert is published by Corporate Quality Head (with input from Mr. Dipanjan Dutta) to take a note of this and avoid
such situation at Project site. For any clarification/ training contact email: rupesh.k@jmcprojects.com , GSM 9428369702

Doc No:-01000/JMC/JMCH20R/QA009

( Learning Continued)

 All the water pipelines in TMs shall be leak-proof and shall be inspected timely for thickness , leakage and joint
tightness.
 All the machinery such as TMs and automated batching plants shall be maintained as per maintenance schedule
and inspected timely. No set concrete any time , any where in system.
 In no case water addition shall be allowed for workability of concrete, rather with Quality trained personnel
admixture doing as per pretest details shall only be done restricting overdosing.
 High silt & porous aggregates shall be rejected and all material shall be as per design mix only.
 Concrete shall not be over-vibrated which leads to settling of aggregates and ultimately paste comes up.
 Early curing by mist spray during setting of concrete and sprinkling/spraying of water on initially set concrete along
with use of wet jute bags, plastic sheet / tarpaulin sheets etc. shall be followed.
 There should be proper planning of pours and shall be mostly planned during night in summer seasons. Also,
windy atmospheric conditions, low humid & high temperature environmental conditions shall be completely
avoided.
 Slump of the concrete shall be as per specification based on practical condition of production, transportation,
pumping and placing. Also, depends of type of structure being casted. Slump more than the desired shall not be
allowed anyway.
 Over trowelling of concrete surface shall be avoided. Brooming shall be done to avoid plastic shrinkage cracks.
 Concrete mix designs with the use of secondary supplementary materials like flyash and GGBS shall be
encouraged.
 Proper skilled workmanship and supervision shall be ensured during and post casting. Concrete shall be allowed
to be cured for not less than 10-14 days.
 For projects, its prudent to have training for activities from expert and Division Quality Head / HO Quality team
can provide all support for this.
 All Concrete Design mix shall be pre-discussed with HO Quality team to get optimised mix.
 Special attention shall be given during pep-talk for concrete handling.
 Experts opinion shall be taken for critical structure concreting and concreting operation shall be done accordingly.
