The Basic Concepts of Dance

The first thing that the student should learn in order for him to appropriate and have interest in dance is
to know and understand its concept. Dance is considered the mother of all arts. To be educated in dance is to
become knowledgeable about its background, classification and function. As the Greek philosopher Plato once
said to sing well and to dance well is to be well to be well.

What is Dance?
The English word dance is related to French danse, which is believed to have been derived from the
ancient High German word dansor, meaning to stretch or drag.
Dance is a form of art that is made by purposefully recreating selected sequences of human motion,
which can be imbued with the values of aesthetic and symbolism that are acknowledged by both performers
and observers from within the particular culture.
First archeological proof of dance comes from the 9 thousand year old cave paintings in India.
After the arrival of European Renaissance, the history of music and dance exploded with the new
additions to song and dance.

Dance Forms

1. Ballet
 a theatrical art form using dancing, music,
and scenery to convey a story, theme, or atmosphere
 dancing in which conventional poses and steps
are combined with light flowing figures (such as leaps and turns)
 a type of performance dance that originated during
the Italian Renaissance in the fifteenth century and
later developed into a concert dance form in France and Russia.

2. Modern Dance
 is a broad genre of western concert or theatrical dance which included dance styles such as
ballet, folk, ethnic, religious, and social dancing; and primarily arose out of Europe and the
United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
 is often considered to have emerged as a rejection of, or rebellion against, classical ballet,
although historians have suggested that socioeconomic changes in both the United States and
Europe helped to initiate shifts in the dance world.
3. Folk Dance
 The Folk Dance are dances that are developed by people that reflect the life of the people of a
certain country or region.

Different Types of Folk Dance


a. Ball de bastons – Weapon dance from Spain and Portugal
b. Céilidh – Gaelic folk dance originating from Scotland and Ireland
c. Clogging – Folk dance that features beating of heavy footwear on the floor
d. English country dance – Traditional English folk dance that is also danced in
France and Germany
e. Fandango – Traditional Spanish couples dance that is accompanied by guitars
and clapping hands or castanets.
f. Georgian folk dances – They include dances such as Kartuli, Khorumi,
Acharuli, Partsa, Kazbeguri, Khevsuruli and many others.
g. Greek dances – Rich Greek history has borne over 100 of traditional folk
dances, including a dozen that was danced at ancient feasts such as Angelica,
Carpaea, Cordax and others.
h. Hora - Traditional folk dance of Balkans, danced in Montenegro, Macedonia,
Bulgaria and several other countries.
i. Kolo – Folk dance of that is danced in South Slavic countries such as Serbia,
Bosnia, Croatia, Macedonia, and Slovenia.
j. Irish Dance – Traditional folk dance that has several forms of dancing,
including popular Irish Step Dance.
k. Italian folk dance – Italy is a home of many popular folk dances such as
Tarantella, Pizzica, Monferrina, Calabrian Tarantella and Ballu tundu.
l. Jota – Popular Spanish folk dance.
m. Morris Dance – Traditional English dance is originating from the 15th century.
n. Polka – Very popular traditional dance from the Czech Republic that is danced
today all around the world.
o. Turkish dances – Bar, Halay, Horon, Zeybek and Sufi spinning dance.
p. Hungarian dances – Most famous Hungarian folk dances are Verbuňk, Ugrós,
Karikázóm, Legényes and Csárdás.
q. Polska – Traditional folk dance of Nordic countries (Denmark, Sweden, Finland
and Norway)
r. Square Dance – Traditional dance originating from England, it involves four
pairs of dancers.
s. Sword (or Weapon) dances – Genre of folk dances, consisting of dozens
upon dozens of individual dances from all around the world
t. Dollu Kunitha – Very popular drum-based dance from India.
u. Bhangra – Famous Punjabi harvest dance.
v. Attan - The national dance of Pashtun regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan.
w. Khigga – Celebration or Wedding circle dance of Assyria
x. Odori – Japanese folk dance, performed at streets during celebrations and
parades
y. Buyō – Japanese geisha and artist dance.
4. Exercise Dance
 This include several forms of dance which are commonly performed for fitness purposes but which
contain elements that are distinctly dance like.
Examples are zumba and aerobics.

5. Classical Dance
 These are dances with standardized rules and restriction. The dances are common among Asian
countries where drama, music and dance are closely interrelated. Relying on symbolic gestures, masks
or elaborate make-up and magnificent costumes, classical dances often narrate stories based on
mythology, historical events and legends. Performances may last for many hours.

6. Ballroom Dance
 The most widespread form of participating dance, ballroom dance ranges from the familiar social
dances which were popular in past decades, such as foxtrot, waltz, tango, rumba or other Latin
American steps, to pulsating and physically exciting rock and roll or discotheque dances.
7. Ethnic Dance
 This refers to the type of dance performed by specialized ethnic groups. Such dances tend to be
highly traditional, linked directly to social customs or religious practices, and stylized in their
movement and presentation.

8. Dance drama
 This hybrid form of dance are found on the Broadway, stage, movies or television. The
choreography are usually a combined elements of drama and dance in any form. It tends to be
bright and highly polished form of glamorous entertainment that are visually pleasing to a broad
audience.
9. Allied Movement Form
 This is a choreographed routine performed before an audience either for entertainment or a
recognized sports event. This includes ice skating, synchronized swimming, gymnastics aerial
dancing. Martial arts such as aikido and arnis also fits this category.
Dance Fundamentals

To further experience dance in a more specific way, one must be able to understand and execute its
fundamentals. The very basic of the position of the arms and feet should be properly executed. The common dance
terms and steps must also be demonstrated. Learning the fundamentals will lead you to a better performance in your
dance experience because these fundamentals are basic to all types of dances.
