After the Chinese Rule, the Vietnamese gained independence, but there were no end to their struggle. Their nation
was then caught in a series of wars against the Northern Invaders. From 1859 to 1885 the country was successively
invaded by French forces and eventually became part of the French Indochina and kept under its protectorate for nearly
100 years.

During the 1940’, the nationalist liberation movement Viet Minh emerged under Ho Chi Minh with the purpose of regaining
independence from France and to defy Japanese occupation. n 1960’s the Vietnam War broke causing the US to send
about 500,000 troops during the peak of the war in 1965. The US president approved a strategic air command (SAC)
bombing operation in Cambodia and Laos called Operation Menu. After almost 20 years of war and millions of deaths ,
South Vietnam shortly became the Republic of South Vietnam after the fall of Saigon and formally integrated with the North
under communist rule as the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on 1976.

Throughout the formation and development of Viet Nam, patriotism, self-reliance, tradition of unity and the willpower to
fight for the righteous cause of the nation are the most important features and the moral standards of the Vietnamese. The
tradition of industriousness, creativeness and patience originates from the life full of hardship of the Vietnamese people.

Vietnam’s history is scarred by invasion. First by the Chinese, then the French, then the Americans. And along left their
influence in religion, tradition, culture, and culinary marks.

The most widespread religions of Vietnamese are Buddhism, Confucianism, and Taoism. Sometimes, they are grouped
together as one religion called the three teachings or tam giáo
The Vietnamese Lunar New Year is undoubtedly the most important and widely celebrated public festival of the year in
Vietnam. It is the occasion for Vietnamese to express their respects for ancestors as well as welcoming the lunar New
Year with family members.

The most common dish in Vietnam is undoubtedly pho. Pho ba is thought to hav influenced by the French
colonialists’ pot-au-feu, or beef stew. And Some say the main inspiration was the Chinese dish guòqiáo mĭ xiàn
