CE 614: Assignment 2

(Prepared by K.K. Wijesundara)

1 A rectangular steel plate of 20 mm thick is modeled using two constant

strain triangular (CST) elements as shown in Figure 1. The node 1 in the
model is roller supported while the nodes 3 and 4 are pin supported. A
vertical concentrated load of 10 kN is applied to node 2. The modulus of
elasticity of steel E is 200 GPa and the poison ratio v is 0.3.

Figure 1

(a) Assemble the two element stiffness matrices to find the global stiffness matrix
(b) Find the vertical and horizontal displacements at node 2, stresses and strains
of two elements
(c) Model the plate using Sap 2000 with 2 elements and compare the results.
2 A concrete cantilever wall of 100 mm thick is modeled using four constant
strain triangular (CST) elements as shown in Figure 2. The nodes 1 and 4
are pin supported. A horizontal uniform pressure of 10 MPa is applied as
shown in Figure 2. The modulus of elasticity of steel E is 30 GPa and the
Poisson’s ratio v is 0.3.

Figure 2

(a) Assemble the four element stiffness matrices to find the global stiffness matrix
(b) Find the stress and strain in each element

(c) Model the plate using Sap 2000 with 4 elements and compare the results.
3 A triangular element has a base width of b and a height of h as shown in
Figure 3. The origin of the x-y coordinate system is placed at the centroid
of the element and weight densities in the directions of x and y are px and
py in weight pre unit volume. Calculate body forces at the nodes.

Figure 3

4 A dam cross section shown in Figure 4 has a width of 30m at the base and
height of 60m and It is fixed at the base. Calculate resultant displacement at
dam top due to triangular distributed water pressure and the gravitational
body using a single CST element. Modulus of elasticity, Poisson’s ratio and
weight density of the dam material is 30 GPa, 0.15 and 24 kN/m3, respectively.
