LEARNING COMPETENCIES:
• illustrates the measures of central tendency (mean, median, and mode)
of a statistical data. M7SP-IVf-1
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
K: Define the mean, mode and median of statistical data.
Arrange the collected data values in ascending order with their corresponding
frequencies: 2 6 5 8 2 5 5 3
Questions:

The graph below shows number of customers of XY Convenience Store
during a typical week. Find the average number of customers in a typical day.

The mean (commonly called the average) of a set of n numbers is the sum of all the numbers
divided by n.
The median is the middle number when the number in a set of data is arrange in descending
order. When there are even numbers of elements, the median is the mean of two middle
numbers.
The mode is the number that occurs most often in a set of data. A set of data can have more
than one mode. If all the numbers appear the same number of times, there is no mode for the
data set.
UNGROUPED DATA:
To find the Mean Alex adds up all the numbers, then divides by how many numbers:
Mean = 59 + 65 + 61 + 62 + 53 + 55 + 60 + 70 + 64 + 56 + 58 + 58 + 62 + 62 + 68 + 65 + 56 + 59 + 68 + 61 + 67
21
= 61.38095
To find the Median Alex places the numbers in value order and finds the middle number.
4
To find the Mode or modal value, Alex places the number in value order then counts how
many of each number. The mode is the number which appears most often (there can be more
than one mode).

The value of ₱59.00 is the mean of the set of values that represent the savings of the students.

Formula Weighted Mean To find the mean of a set of
data in frequency table.
𝚺𝐟𝐗
𝑿= 1. Multiply each ‘X’ in
𝑵
the set of data by ‘f’ to
obtain ‘fX’.
where: x = mean f = frequency, x = score
2. Find the sum of ‘fX’.
ΣfX = sum of the product of frequency and score 3. Find the sum of , (N).

N = total frequency 4. The mean, 𝑿 =

To apply the formula for weighted mean, we add the ‘fx’ column to the frequency table.

7
In general, a data with N observations arranged in ascending order.
1. If N is odd, the median is the middle position which is
𝑁 𝑡ℎ
( 2 ) position.
2. If N is even, the median is the mean of two middle data which are

the ( 𝟐 ) and ( 𝟐 + 𝟏) data.
Example:
Calculate the median of the Mid-year Test Sores of students in Filipino.
Solution:

The 20th score contained in the class 26-30. This means that the median falls
within the class boundaries of 26-30. That is, 25.5 – 30.5.
b. <cf = 9

The Mode (GROUPED)
The mode of grouped data can be approximated using the following formula:
𝑫𝟏
Mode = 𝒍𝒃𝒎𝟎 + [𝑫 ]𝒊
𝟏 +𝑫𝟐
Example:
Calculate the mode of the mid-year test scores of the students in Filipino.
Since class 26-30 has the highest frequency, therefore the modal class is 26-30.
Lbmo = 25.5
D1 = 14 – 8 = 6
D2 = 14 – 7 = 7

Read the problems carefully. Determine the value of the ‘Measures of Central Tendency”
being asked.
1. The ages of weekend basketball players are 42, 40, 37, 20, 35, 28, 32, 43, 39 and 34
respectively. Find the mean and median ages.
2. There are 30 students in a Grade 7 class. The grades obtained by the students in
