IGBC (INDIAN GREEN BUILDING

COUNCIL)

The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), part of the Confederation of Indian
Industry (CII) was formed in the year 2001. The vision of the council is, "To
enable a sustainable built environment for all and facilitate India to be one of
the global leaders in the sustainable built environment by 2025".
CII-Sohrabji Green Business Centre, Hyderabad which is India's 1st Platinum
rated green building are the headquarters of the IGBC.

The council offers a wide array of services which include developing new green
building rating programmes, certification services and green building training
programmes. The council also organises Green Building Congress, its annual
flagship event on green building.

The council is committee-based, member-driven and consensus-focused. All the

stakeholders of construction industry comprising of architects, developers,
product manufacturers, corporate, Government, academia and nodal agencies
participate in the council activities through local chapters. The council also
closely works with several State Governments, Central Government, World
Green Building Council, bilateral multi-lateral agencies in promoting green
building concepts in the country.

CONFEDERATION OF INDIAN INDUSTRY (CII)

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) works to create and sustain an

environment conducive to the development of India, partnering Industry,
Government and civil society, through advisory and consultative processes.
CII is a non-government, not-for-profit, industry-led and industry-managed
organization, with over 9000 members from the private as well as public
sectors, including SMEs and MNCs, and an indirect membership of over
300,000 enterprises from 294 national and regional sectoral industry bodies.
 CII-SOHRABJI GREEN BUILDING CENTRE

CII-Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre (CII-Godrej GBC) was established

in the year 2004, as CII’s Developmental Institute on Green Practices &
Businesses, aimed at offering world class advisory services on conservation of
natural resources.

The Green Business Centre in Hyderabad is housed in one of the greenest

buildings in the world and through Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) is
spearheading the Green Building movement in the country.
The Green Business Centre was inaugurated by H.E. LATE Dr. A. P. J. Abdul
Kalam, on 14 July 2004.

IGBC RATING SYSYTEM

Green building rating brings together a host of sustainable practices and

solutions to reduce the environmental impacts. Green building design provides
an integrated approach considering life cycle impacts of the resources used.

The IGBC rating systems are voluntary, consensus based, market-driven

building programmes. The rating systems are based on the five elements of the
nature (Panchabhutas) and are a perfect blend of ancient architectural practices
and modern technological innovations.
The Panchabhutas (5 elements of nature) include:
Prithvi (Earth): sustainable sites
Jal (water): water efficiency
Agni (Energy): Energy efficiency and atmosphere
Vayu (Air): Indoor air quality
Akash (Sky): Daylight, night sky
These are the 5 major areas which are brought in work for the approach of a
sustainable structure.
IGBC have different rating systems for different buildings present in different
sectors. An important development in the growth of green building movement
in India is the launch of the following IGBC Green Building Rating Systems:
Commercial: IGBC Green New Building, IGBC Green Existing Building,
IGBC Green Interior, IGBC Green Campus, IGBC Green Data Centres
Residential: IGBC Green Homes, IGBC Green Residential Societies, IGBC
Green Affordable Housing, IGBC Green Cities, IGBC Green villages
Transit: IGBC Green Metro Stations, IGBC Green Railway Station
Education: IGBC Green Schools, IGBC Workshop Places
Industrial: IGBC Green Factory Buildings, IGBC Green SEZ
Health & Wellbeing: IGBC Green Healthcare

IGBC GREEN NEW BUILDING RATING SYSTEM:

The building sector in India is growing at a rapid pace and contributing
immensely to the growth of the economy. This augurs well for the country and
now there is an imminent need to introduce green concepts and techniques in
this sector, which can aid growth in a sustainable manner.
The green concepts and techniques in the building sector can help address
national issues like water efficiency, energy efficiency, reduction in fossil fuel
use in commuting, handling of consumer waste and conserving natural
resources. Most importantly, these concepts can enhance occupant health,
happiness and well-being.
Against this background, the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) has
launched IGBC Green New Buildings rating system to address the National
priorities. This rating programme is a tool which enables the designer to apply
green concepts and reduce environmental impacts that are measurable. The
rating programme covers methodologies to cover diverse climatic zones and
changing lifestyles.
IGBC has set up the Green New Buildings Core Committee under the
leadership of Ar. Raghavendran, to develop the rating programme. IGBC Green
New Buildings rating system is designed primarily for new buildings. New
Buildings include (but are not limited to) offices, IT parks, banks, shopping
malls, hotels, airports, stadiums, convention centres, libraries, museums, etc.,
Building types such as residential, factory buildings, schools will be covered
under other IGBC rating programmes
The Green New Building Rating System covers Sustainable Architecture and
Design, Site Selection and Planning, Water Conservation, Energy Efficiency,
Indoor Environmental Quality, Innovation and Development.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY: The building sector includes large consumption of
electrical energy. Through IGBC Green New Building rating system, building
can reduce energy consumption through energy efficient- building envelope,
lighting, air conditioning system etc. The energy saving could range from 20-
30% from the day of occupancy.
WATER EFFICIENCY: Water is among the elements that can disappear
soon, so water conservation plays an important role in a sustainable structure.
IGBC Green New Buildings rating system encourages use of water in self
sustainable manner through reduce, recycle and reuse strategies. Water saving
upto 30-50% can be observed.
REDUCED USE OF FOSSIL FUELS: Fossil fuel is a slowly depleting
resource. The use of fossil fuel for transportation has been major source of
pollution. The rating system encourages the use of alternate fuel vehicles for
transportation.
HEALTH and WELL-BEING OF OCCUPANTS: Health and Well-being of
occupant is one of the most important aspect of the IGBC Green New Building
rating system. The rating system ensures adequate ventilation, daylight etc. and
measure steps are also taken in consideration to minimise the indoor air
pollutants.
IGBC PROJECTS INDIA:
Over 4,400+ projects are registered with IGBC from various parts of India and
abroad, amounting to a total footprint of 4.72 billion sq. ft.

SOME OF THE GREEN BUILDINGS IN INDIA:

Suzlon One Earth, Pune
This significantly unique office is designed by Christopher Charles, Pune based
architect and has received LEED Platinum rating in 2010. To ignite our eyes, he
and his partner came up with the concept “Office in the garden”. Spread over 10
acres, this magnificent structure is one of the largest green building projects of
the country and is also one of the India’s first buildings to be LEED (Leadership
in Energy and Environmental Design) certified.
Suzlon one earth is 100% powered by onsite and offsite renewable sources. The
campus has 18 hybrid wind turbines that fulfil 7% of the total energy
consumption, the rest of energy demand is met from offsite wind turbines.  The
structure is designed in a way to ensure maximum daylight exposure thereby
reducing artificial lighting consumption. The infrastructure within the campus is
designed to enable water percolation and thereby control storm water runoff
thus, contributing towards an increased water table level.
