The entire province of Capiz was flooded, with water rising to as high as five meters in some
areas, after typhoon Ursula also known in international name: Phanfone, dumped rain across the
Visayas and parts of Luzon islands last Christmas.
On 4:00 AM, 25 December 2019, the eye of Typhoon "URSULA" was located based on all
available data including Iloilo Doppler Radar at 40 km East Northeast of Roxas City, Capiz
(11.7°N, 123.1 °E) with maximum sustained winds of 140 kph near the center and gustiness of
up to 195 kph and moving West Northwest at 25 kph.
I woke up early in the morning in December 25, 2019 after Christmas Day and I heard my
mother and father murmuring in the background because I’m still not on my sense I wondered
why they were a little panicked and they were using flashlights only. I heard large sounds of rain
drops coming from our roof of the house and crackled sounds of the trees from the outside. I
suddenly felt chills that I that the wind are whispered loudly as if it want to destroy on its way. I
came to my sense that the Typhoon Ursula already landed here in Capiz. I checked my phone to
know what time is it and it is already 4:30 AM in the morning. Such dark place with only faint
lights can be seen inside the house. I checked my grandmother, aunt and my cousin who’s spent
their Christmas at our house. They were still asleep in their room. I helped my father and mother
to put plywoods in the windows of our kitchen because the rain is getting there. I heard a lot of
branches dropped at our roof and the roof nearby our house can be heard also because it was
about to be removed. Luckily I have my data and I checked my facebook account to know the
status of my friends and news about the typhoon Ursula. A lot of my friends posting and sharing
posts about Ursula. I checked the page of DYVR and saw their post that the typhoon Ursula
landed at 2:00 AM and we’re on the signal no. 3. I closed my phone and went back at our room
together with my mom and dad. 30 minutes had passed and the heavy rains and strong winds
were still there, I decided to go to sleep because I’m so sleepy while mom and dad just lying in
our bed but I know dad was guarding us.
I woke up again at 8:00 AM in the
morning, the outside were bright, the
rains and winds slightly became weak
but still continuing slamming the
objects around them. As I checked the
outside of the house, the big tree near at our neighbor crashed on the ground and blocking their
way. Some trees went half-bald because of the wind. A lot of Christmas decorations were
destroyed at the plaza and I saw in my facebook account posts about the areas affected by
typhoon Ursula, a lot of homes were destroyed and flooded and buildings were also destroyed.
The night before the typhoon came, the NDRRMC sent us messages multiple times and it helped
people evacuate early to the near evacuation areas but there are some people ignored the
messages and stayed in their homes. Some people were unfortunate because they didn’t make it
to the evacuation area and there are news that there are also people went missing due to floods
and some were found dead. The entire area of Capiz were affected by brownouts due to the posts
that were destroyed in which the electricity cannot be restored to the people’s houses. Days were
spent until the power is back but there are still some areas that still haven’t power back on.
During the days when there was no power, people went to their neighbors to charge their phones
and flashlight and some went to stores and malls. Luckily for us that we have our own generator
to supply our home an electricity.
This Christmas Day was sad for us because we thought that it will be happy because every year
we have family gatherings, vacation day for us students and other employees, and spent time
together with our parents during this season but not this year. A lot of families grieved for their
loved ones who were missing and found dead, homes were destroyed which it is difficult for
them to have rest. Despite of all the things happened, some people can be seen smiling on their
faces because that’s what makes us known for being happy despite of the disaster affected their
lives.
An experience like this will also make you see the ugly side of human nature. However, it can
also show you the nobility, compassion, and decency of the human spirit. There were people who
chose to stand strong for the community and for the city, people who volunteered, people who
chose to help relatives, friends, and even strangers despite their own losses.
I hope that most people can look back and say that despite the tragedy that visited their lives they
did something that they can be proud of. If not, then I hope that one learns from the examples
shown by those who did.
