HURDLES

Hurdles races are events in which the competitors


run over the obstacles called hurdles. Most of
these races have 10 hurdles spaced at equal
intervals.
There are two types of hurdle races:
Intermediate hurdles
The Steeplechase

STEEPLECHASE
 In athletics (track-and-field), a footrace over an
obstacle course that includes such obstacles as
water ditches, open ditches, and fences.

WALKING RACES
A long-distance footrace in which the athletes must walk and not
run. In race walking, there is a rule known as the “straight leg
rule,” which means the moment the leading foot touches the
ground and until the leg passes under the center of the body, the
knee is not allowed to bend. Athletes are penalized for bending
their knees, as their knee passes under the body or when one of
their feet are not touching the ground, which is why form and
technique are very important in this sport.
RELAY
 A track-and-field sport consisting of a set
number of stages (legs), usually four, each leg
run by a different member of a team. The runner
finishing one leg is usually required to pass on a
baton to the next runner while both
are running in a marked exchange zone.

LONG JUMP
 a track-and-field event in which a jump
for distance is made usually from a
running start.
HIGH JUMP
- an athletic event in which competitors
jump over a bar that is raised until only
one competitor can jump over it
without dislodging it.

themselves up.

DISCUS THROW
-also known as disc throw, is a track and
field event in which an athlete throws a
heavy disc—called a discus—in an
attempt to mark a farther distance than
their competitors. 

HAMMER THROW
 A field event in which a usually 16-pound metal
sphere attached to a flexible handle is thrown

JAVELIN THROW
 Javelin or javelin throw is part of the track
and field event. A javelin or a spear about 8
feet long is used to throw for maximum
distance.

SHUT PUT THROW


 A track and field event that involves throwing
a heavy metal ball called a shot as far as
possible using only one arm in a pushing
motion, what is called putting. 
DECATHLON
lasting two consecutive days in which
contestants take part in 10 track-and-
field events. It was introduced as
a three-day event at the Olympic
Games in 1912.

HEPATHLON
 Heptathlon, athletics competition in
which contestants take part in seven
different track-and-field events in two
days. The heptathlon replaced the
women’s pentathlon in the Olympic
Games after 1981. 

PENTATHLON
 Pentathlon, athletic contest entailing
five distinct types of competition.
