This document deals with the formative assessment of your competence towards the outcomes which you need to
achieve. “Formative Assessment refers to assessment that takes place during the process of learning and
teaching” (SAQA: Criteria and Guidelines for Assessment Policy Document, pg. 26).
The formative assessment activities and questions in this section count towards your overall competence and also
prepare you for the summative assessment to follow. Ensure that all the questions are answered in filled giving
examples where asked.

2. A swimming pool is 7m long, 5m wide, and 3m deep. It has the same depth everywhere. What is the
inside surface of the swimming pool and what is the volume (in m3)? Show your calculations.
= 107m2
Volume = area of the base x the height
= 7m x 5m x 3m
= 105m2
3. Calculate the volume of a cylinder with a radius of 3 metre and a depth of 5 metre. What is the surface
area of the wall of the cylinder?
The length of the top and bottom of the cylinder need to be calculated. It is the same as the circumference of the
circle.
Circumference = 2xnr =2 x n x 3 x 3m = 18.8m
Area = length x breath
= 18.8m x 5m
= 94m2
= 141,4m3
Width 3m²(300cm²)
Height 2.5m²(250cm²)
For accuracy I used a tape measure as the length ran from end to end of the wall. The
Measurements were as follow:
Length 4m2 (400cm2)
Width: 2.90m2 (290cm2)
Height is 2.54m2(254cm2)
5.1. Why is there a difference in your estimated values when compared to the values you obtained from
the measuring instrument?
Because an estimation is a guess or assumption of what you think the measurement will be it
is not accurate.

III. You are working on recoveries after invoicing. One of your clients Rack Computers had a total invoice of
R200 000, they paid R210 000. What is the over recovery and how must it be treated in the books of
accounts?
The over recovery is R10 000. A credit needs to be passed to Rack Computers for the over payment.
As a company we need to treat the over payment as a liability as it is revenue received for services not
yet rendered. The customer can either receive service for the value of the over payment or be
reimbursed. Until this is done the amount should be treated as a liability to balance the books.
