DCOM Configuration Step by Step

This procedure is intended for distributed processing customers. It explains how you
may configure DCOM to enable this capability. The procedure involves relaxing security
to “Everyone” and perhaps opening a TCP/IP “port” which may expose you to some risk
on networks that have access to the internet. You may wish to increase the security level,
depending on your systems’ configurations, and specify that only specific users have
rights. If you decide to follow this procedure you assume all risk and agree to hold
BioComp harmless.

Start DCOM Configuration by going to Start | Run… and entering DCOMCNFG.EXE.

Click OK.

You should see this window appear…

Click Component Services, to expand the list below then Computers, then My Computer.
Click DCOM Config.

Find BcsModeler102 in the list. The ending on the name may vary.
Right-click and select Properties then click the Security tab.

You should now see this window…

Make certain that Launch Permissions, Access Permissions, and Configuration Permissions are
all set to Use Default.

Click OK.
You should be back here again.

Now Right click the My Computer icon and select Properties

Click the Default Properties tab. You should see this window…

Make sure that Enable Distributed COM on this computer is checked.

Click Apply. Then Select the Default COM Security tab.

You should see this…

Under Default Access Permissions click the Edit Default button and you should see this
window…

Make sure that Everyone is in the Group or user name list and Access Permission is set to
Allow. If Everyone is not in the user list, click the Add… button.

Click the “Advanced” button.

Then click Find Now
Scroll down through the list until you see Everyone and click OK, then OK again.

You should see this again…

Make sure that Access Permission is set to Allow and click OK.

You should be back here…

Under Launch Permissions…select “Edit Default”.

Make certain that Everyone is in the list with Launch Permission set to Allow. If not click
the Add button then Advanced, and Find Now.

Select Everyone from the list and click OK.

Click OK again.

Make sure Launch Permission is set to Allow. Click OK one more time.

You should be back at My Computer Properties…

Click OK.
Windows Firewall
The Windows Firewall, which is often installed with Windows XP, may interfere with
distributed processing. If you are on a secure network, such as one not connected to the
internet, you may choose to deactivate your firewall to bypass these issues. However if
your security policy requires Windows Firewall there are some additional steps you will
need to take on each machine that will be utilized by Profit, including the local machine.
You should consider these suggestions with your network/IT administrator, if you have
one.

Start Control Panel by clicking Start | Control Panel.

Click Windows Firewall.

Click the Exceptions tab.

Click the Add Port button.

Next to Name type DCOM

Next to Port number type: 135

Click OK.
You should be back at the Exceptions tab and you should see an entry for DCOM.

Now click the Add Program… button.

Click the Browse button to browse to C:\Program Files\Common Files\BioComp
Systems\Modeler\Program

Select BcsModeler102.exe and click Open, then click OK.

You should now see the BcsModeler102.exe displayed in the list of Exceptions.

Click Add Program… again. Click the Browse button and browse to
C:\Programs Files\BioComp Systems\Profit and select Profit.exe.

Click Open

Click OK.

Follow the procedures above for each machine that will be running Profit.

You should be all set.
