Renal Tubulointerstitial Diseases
Renal Tubulointerstitial Diseases
Renal Tubulointerstitial Diseases
Tubulointerstitial diseases are clinically
heterogeneous disorders that share similar features
of tubular and interstitial injury. In severe and
prolonged cases, the entire kidney may become
involved, with glomerular dysfunction and even
renal failure.
The primary categories of tubulointerstitial disease are
Acute tubular necrosis
Acute or chronic tubulointerstitial nephritis
Contrast nephropathy is acute tubular necrosis caused by
an iodinated radiocontrast agent.
Analgesic nephropathy, reflux nephropathy,
and myeloma kidney are types of chronic
tubulointerstitial nephritis.
Tubulointerstitial disorders can also result from metabolic
disturbances and exposure to toxins.
Renal tubulo-interstitial diseases includes
pyelonephritis and pyeloureteritis cystica
Some drugs and heavy metals may induce renal
tubulo-interstitial diseases
Some other renal tubulo-interstitial diseases like
balkan nephropathy, balkan endemic nephropathy
DEFINITIONS
Pyelonephritis is an inflammation of the
kidney tissue, calyces, and renal pelvis. It is
commonly caused by bacterial infection that has
spread up the urinary tract or travelled through the
bloodstream to the kidneys
A similar term is "pyelitis" which means
inflammation of the pelvis and calyces
pyelitis together with nephritis is collectively known
as pyelonephritis.
Severe cases of pyelonephritis can lead
to pyonephrosis (pus accumulation around the
kidney), sepsis (a systemic inflammatory response of
the body to infection), kidney failure and even death.
SIGNS&SYMPTOMS
fever
accelerated heart rate
painful urination
abdominal pain radiating to the back
nausea
tenderness at the costovertebral angle
Pyeloureteritis cystica is a rare situation of the renal
pelvis and ureters, characterized by cystical
formations of the epithelium.
The etiology is unknown and there is no specific
treatment. It is usually diagnosed accidently during
imaging of the upper urinary tract for different
reasons.
Hydronephrosis in simple words water in kidney’s,
is a condition caused by urinary retention due to
obstruction of the free flow of urine from the kidney.
Stricture of ureter is defined as narrowing of the
ureter lumen in size
Balkan nephropathy also known as Balkan endemic
nephropathy-is a form of interstitial nephritis.
