MODULE 3:

Force and
Motion
INTRODUCTION:

INTERACTION:
Lecture and
Discussion
DEFINITION OF FORCE
a push or a pull
HOW FORCE AFFECT
 MOTION:
 1. Force can make an object
move starting from rest.
2. Force can make a moving
object stop.
3. Force can change the
direction of a moving
object.
TERMS RELATED TO FORCE
BALANCED FORCE – if net
force is zero, meaning no
change in state of motion

UNBALANCED FORCE –
if net force has a numerical
value, meaning there is a
change in state of motion
50 Newtons,
NET FORCE – single force left
that cause a change in the
state of motion of an object
TYPES OF FORCES
1. CONTACT FORCE –
forces that require
physical contact
2. NONCONTACT
FORCE –
action-at-a-distance
force or field force
TYPES OF CONTACT FORCES
1. APPLIED FORCE –
force which is
applied to an object
2. NORMAL FORCE –
support force exerted
upon an object which
is in contact with
another stable object
TYPES OF CONTACT FORCES
3. FRICTIONAL FORCE
– force that opposes
the motion of object
4. AIR RESISTANCE –
special type of
frictional force
which acts upon
objects as they travel
through the air
TYPES OF CONTACT FORCES
5. TENSIONAL FORCE –
force which is
transmitted through a
string, rope or wire
when it is pulled tightly
at each end
6. SPRING FORCE – force
exerted by a compressed
or stretched spring
TYPES OF NON-CONTACT FORCES
1. GRAVITATIONAL FORCE
OR WEIGHT – downward
force towards the center of
the earth
2. ELECTRIC FORCE –
force exists between
charges
3. MAGNETIC FORCE –
force that exists between
magnets.
NEWTON’S THREE LAWS OF MOTION
1. Law of Inertia – An
object at rest will remain
at rest and an object in
motion will remain in its
constant motion, unless
acted upon by
unbalanced forces

Inertia – dependent on mass;

tendency to resist changes in
their state of motion
NEWTON’S THREE LAWS OF MOTION
2. Law of Acceleration – The
acceleration of an object is
directly proportional to the net
external force acting on the
object and inversely
proportional to the mass of the
object

NOTE: There is acceleration if …

Constant mass, increase in force

means increase in acceleration
Constant force, increase in
acceleration means less mass
NEWTON’S THREE LAWS OF MOTION
3. Law of Interaction – For
every action there is an
equal but opposite reaction
NOTE:
Action and reaction always
come in pairs
Action and reaction are equal
in magnitude but opposite in
direction
Action and reaction act on two
different bodies
Action and reaction forces have
the same line of action
FORMULA OF FORCE
FORMULA OF FORCE

F = ma

Where:
F = force = N or kg.m/s2
m = mass = kg
a = acceleration = m/s2
SAMPLE PROBLEM
1. A truck with a mass of 1500 kg is
decelerated at a rate of 5m/s2 . How much
force
Given: did this require?
m = 1500 kg
a = 5m/s2
F=?
F = ma
F = (1500 kg)(5m/s2 )
F = 7500 N or kg. m/s2
SAMPLE PROBLEM
2. A thug pushes some 100 kg punk with 300
N of force. How much is the punk
accelerated?
Given:
m = 100 kg
F = 300 N
a=?
a = F/m
a = 300 N / 100 kg
a = 3 m/s2
SAMPLE PROBLEM
3. A batter hits a baseball with 500 N and the ball is
accelerated at 25 m/s2 . What is the mass of the ball?
Given:
a = 25 m/s2
F = 500 N
m=?
m = F/ a
m = 500 N (kg.m/s2 ) / 25 m/s2
m = 20 kg
