Importance of Meshing

Meshing is the process of dividing a continuous domain into discrete elements to allow for numerical solutions of partial differential equations using finite element analysis. It breaks the domain into thousands of simple shapes defined by nodes and elements. Creating an appropriate mesh is important because it influences the accuracy, convergence and speed of simulations. Mesh quality factors like orthogonality and aspect ratio can affect analysis results, so proper topology and smoothing algorithms should be used. Hexahedral meshes tend to give more accurate solutions than other element types.

Importance of Meshing:

What is meshing?

In Finite Element Analysis (FEA) the goal is to simulate some physical phenomena using a
numerical technique called the Finite Element Method (FEM). To quantify physical
phenomena such as wave propagation or fluid flow we must use mathematical equations.
Most physical phenomena can be solved using Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) but this
is very difficult for most real-world problems. Any continuous object has infinite degrees of
freedom (DOF) which makes it impossible to solve using hand calculations. So in FEM, we
create a mesh which splits the domain into a discrete number of elements for which the
solution can be calculated. The data is then interpolated across the whole domain.

Why is meshing Important?

 Meshing is the process in which the continuous geometric space of an object is broken
down into thousands or more of shapes to properly define the physical shape of the
object. The more detailed a mesh is, the more accurate the 3D CAD model will be,
allowing for high fidelity simulations. Meshing, also known as mesh generation, is the
process of generating a two-dimensional and three-dimensional grid; it is dividing
complex geometries into elements that can be used to discretize a domain. Since meshing
typically consumes a significant portion of the time in acquiring simulation results,
advanced automated meshing tools can provide faster and more accurate solutions.
 Creating the most appropriate mesh is the foundation of engineering simulations. The
mesh influences the accuracy, convergence, and speed of the simulation. Computers
cannot solve simulations on the CAD model’s actual geometry shape as the governing
equations cannot be applied to an arbitrary shape. Mesh elements allow governing
equations to be solved on predictably shaped and mathematically defined volumes.
Typically, the equations solved on these meshes are partial differential equations. Due to
the iterative nature of these calculations, obtaining a solution to these equations is not
practical by hand, and so computational methods such as Computational Fluid
Dynamics (CFD) are employed.

 Mesh Quality:

 A quality mesh guarantees the best analysis results for a problem. Factors that can
affect the quality of a mesh include: orthogonality, aspect ratio, warpage, shearing,
and torsion. When building a mesh you can greatly improve the quality by choose
the propoer topology for the design and using smoothing algorithms to evenly
distribute elements.

 For the same cell count, hexahedral meshes will give more accurate solutions,
especially if the grid lines are aligned with the flow.

 The mesh density should be highenough to capture all relevant flow features.

 The mesh adjacent to the wall should be fine enough to resolve the boundary
layer flow. In boundary layers, quad, hex, and prism/wedge cells are preferred
over tri’s, tets, or pyramids.
