English Program on Intelligent Information Processing

1. Summary
This program will include educational and research activities on the topic of information
processing, where The University of Tokyo is specially and globally strong at. All courses
in this program will be offered in English. Topics in this program include:
- Artificial Intelligence (AI), Data Science, Big Data
- Cybersecurity, Internet of Things (IoTs)
- Robotics, Cybernetics, VR
- Theoretical Computer Science, Advanced Algorithms, Supercomputing
This program provides ways to complete master or doctoral programs without any
Japanese language for international students. It also provides a certificate for
Japanese students that they spend university lives with abundant international
experiences, including curricula using English language and close and active relations
with international students.

2. Requirements
(1) Students who join this program must be master or doctoral students at Graduate
School of Information Science and Technology, The University of Tokyo.
(2) After entering the graduate school, students must register for this program before a
specified date.
(3) For Japanese students, students should be interested in taking courses offered in
English, conducting exchange activities with international students, actively joining
programs organized at foreign universities, and gaining international experiences
during this program.

3. Curriculum
A (Common): Courses and research works that are common for all research
fields in information science and engineering.
B (Basic): Courses on essential basics and background theories of
specific areas.
C (Core): Courses on topics that are central parts of specific areas.
D (Developed): Courses on advanced topics, extending the core knowledge.
International Exchange: Required only for Japanese students. Activities abroad and
attendance to international events are quantified as “points”.
The details those parts of the curriculum are described in the attached table.

4. Requirement for completion


Students must obtain enough credits specified by the graduate school. In addition to that,
students must satisfy the following requirements:

4.1. For Master course


A Research ethics・Master thesis Mandatory
Japanese language courses At least 2 credits
(only for international students)
International exchange activities At least 7 points
(only for Japanese students)
C At least 6 credits※
B to D Including C on the above row At least 12 credits※
※We may allow students to take courses less than that prescribed in the above table, if
the study areas of students are so special and need different scope of learning. In such a
case, students must submit a specified document, and get approve.

4.2. For doctoral course


A Research ethics・Doctoral dissertation Mandatory※
Japanese language courses At least 2 credits
(only for international students)
International exchange activities At least 20 points
(only for Japanese students)
C and D At least 2 credits※
B to D Including C and D on the above row No requirement
※Students who have completed this program in master course also need to take those
credit newly in doctoral course. The only exception is Research ethics, and if one has
already taken the same course in one’s master course, then it is exempted.
※ We may allow students to take a B course in place of C and D courses, if the study
areas of students are so special and it is needed for them. In such a case, students must
submit a specified document, and get approve.

5. Procedure for completion


(1) Students must submit a specified document when they complete the courses.
(2) A certificate with a signature of the dean will be issued for each student who has
submit the document and completed the course.

6. Notes
In case that a student want to quit this program, he/she must send an e-mail to a contact
e-mail address specified in Section 7. However, students who have entered the program
by the Special Admission cannot quit the program without declining the MEXT
scholarship or UTokyo Fellowship.
