Sketch and Describe A Two-Stage Air Compressor Suitable For Marine Use Up To 30 Bar Pressure

This document summarizes a two-stage, single-cylinder air compressor designed for marine use up to 30 bar pressure. It has a differential piston that provides both low-pressure and high-pressure stages of compression. It is water-cooled and lubricated, with intercooling and aftercooling heat exchangers. Automatic drain valves allow the compressor to be unloaded for starting. Suction and discharge valves are thin plates in cylinder head pockets. An electric motor drives the compressor through a flexible coupling.

Construction of reciprocating multistage compressor

Sketch and describe a two-stage air compressor suitable for marine use up to 30 bar
pressure.

The diagram shows a single cylinder, 2-stage single-acting water-cooled air compressor
designed to supply compressed air for engine starting at 30 bar.

(i) LP & HP cylinder & piston

Differential (large & small diameter) piston used
in this reciprocating air compressors, serve to
provide
LP & HP stage of compression by single piston

(ii) Bearings & Piston Lubrication

The big-end bearing is a two-shell plain bearing
and the gudgeon pin bearing press-fitted plain
bearing.

The big end and gudgeon pin bearings are

pressure-lubricated from a gear pump
mounted on the end of the crankshaft. The
crankshaft bearings are ball bearings.

Lubrication of lower HP piston and rings is

splash lubrication, while upper LP piston and
rings are lubricated by metering type cylinder
lubricator

(iii) Air & Cylinder Liner Cooling
Inter cooler and After cooler are tubular heat exchangers. Cooling water circulates outside
the cooler tubes and through CW jacket to cool cylinder walls.

(iv) Compressor Drive

Compressor is driven by electric motor
through flexible coupling.

(v) Auto drain/unloader

Inter and After Cooler Auto drain/ unloader
valves are fitted to compressor. When these
are open, the machine is 'unloaded' and does
not produce compressed air.

A compressor when started must always be in

the unloaded condition to reduce starting
torque.

At few minutes interval auto drain opens to

clear out accumulated oil & moisture, which
can affect lubrication and carry over to air
receiver.

(vi) Suction & Discharge valves
Air suction and discharge valves are in pockets in the cylinder
heads. The valves are of the thin plate type and are as shown in
Figure.
The moving discs of the valves have low inertia to permit rapid
action.

(vii) Intercooler & After cooler
The intercooler is of the single pass type.
The shell forms an integral part of the cylinder
block casting, with the air passing through the
tubes. Bursting disc is provided to protect
casing against overpressure.

The aftercooler is of the double pass U-tube

type. The casing of coolers is integral with the
cylinder block. Bursting disc is provided to
protect casing against overpressure.

LP & HP Relief valves are fitted to the air

outlets of LP & HP stage and are set to lift at
10% above normal stage pressure
