ABOUT WASSILY KANDINSKY

Wassily Wassilyevich Kandinsky

(1866 –1944) was a Russian painter and art
theorist. Kandinsky is generally credited as
the pioneer of abstract art. Born in
Moscow, Kandinsky spent his childhood
in Odessa (today Ukraine). He enrolled at
the University of Moscow, studying law and
economics.
In 1896, Kandinsky settled in Munich,
studying first at Anton Ažbe's private
school and then at the Academy of Fine
Arts. He returned to Moscow in 1914, after
the outbreak of World War I.
In 1920, he returned to German, he taught
at the Bauhaus school of art and
architecture from 1922 until
the Nazis closed it in 1933. He then
moved to France, where he lived for the rest
of his life, becoming a French citizen in
1939 and producing some of his most
prominent art.
He died in Neuilly-sur-Seine in 1944

“Colour is a power which directly influences the soul.”

ABOUT KANDINSKY’S ART

Kandinsky thought that a

painting should have the same
emotional impact on the
viewer as a piece of music. In
his abstract work, Kandinsky
invented a language with
abstract forms to replace the
forms of nature. He used
colors, shapes and lines to
evoke feelings and resonate
with the human soul.

COMPOSITION VIII, 1923

Composition VIII is recognized as one of

the most musically expressive work of art

DO QUANG VU 5
Composition VIII,
produced in 1923 by
Russian artist Wassily
Kandinsky, is an
oil-on-canvas painting
created in the Abstract
style.
The painting consists of a variety of geometric
shapes, colors, straight and curved lines set against
a background of cream that melds at certain points
into areas of pale blue. The use of circles, grids,
rectangles, semicircles, triangles and other
mathematical forms in the artwork is consistent
with the painter's belief in the mystical properties
of geometric shapes while the colors on display are
chosen for their emotional impact.

At the time in which the painting was created,

sometimes referred to as the Bauhaus era, Kandinsky
had moved from the fledgling Soviet Union to the
Weimar Republic due to increasing restrictions on
artistic freedom under the Marxist-Leninist system of
government.

LINE IN THE PAINTING

A lot of diagonal lines are used to give the painting dynamism

The lines are thin and seem to have similar thickness, creating
repetition and melodiousness
The lines have a certain inclination to create the feeling that
they are all moving to the same direction

A special curve line seems to be

created by brush like a soft melody
in a piece of music

DO QUANG VU 7
Repetition of curve lines likes a regular rhythm,
creating an accent of calmness in the middle of
the painting full of chaos

A rare combination of curve line and

straight lines that evokes an
association of a guitar, which is not
usually being seen in an abstract
painting

SHAPE IN THE PAINTING

The geometric vocabulary seems to consist of

comparatively few components like circles,
semicircles, angles, rectangles, and lines. Yet even
if one begins to try to describe the individual
appearance of the various circle forms, neither
pinpoint, ball, disk, globe circular object, or orb
serves to determine accurately their character.

DO QUANG VU 9
One of the painting's most prominent feature is
the large concentric circles at the top left of the
picture, which is immediately struck the viewers
eyes.
This circle creates a strong sense of visual force,
restore the balance in the painting full of
chaotic lines.

ANOTHER GEOMETRIC SHAPES ALSO HAVE A

MEDIUM RANGE OF VISUAL FORCE, CREATING
A PERFECT BACKGROUND FOR THE PAINTING

DO QUANG VU 10
A quiet huge and funny shape, created
by several rectangles, looks like a piano.
Straight lines cut the shape into unequal
rectangles makes people think that
these small shapes are moving and
dancing

All three sharp triangles directly point to the small

dot in the middle of the circle have created a
strong visual force, makes the viewer have to
immediately stared at the dot and recognized the
whole shape as an eye ball.

COLORS IN THE PAINTING

The special thing is, closer

study not only reveals a
multitude of different
shades of color but it also
becomes clear that no one
color is identical with any
other in the painting.

For Kandinsky, every color had a feeling, a

sensation, and a sound.

DO QUANG VU 12
“In music, the absolute green is represented by "the placid
middle notes of a violin."
White has the harmony of silence, which works upon us
negatively "like many pauses and music the break the
melody."
In music, Black is represented by one of those "profound
and final pauses."
Light warm red is the sound of" trumpets- strong, harsh,
and ringing."
Cool red is the" sad, middle tones of a cello."
Orange's note is that of an" Angelus, of an old violin."
Violet is" an English horn, or the deep notes of a wood
instruments." such as the bassoon.
And Blue. Blue is the heavenly color: "a light blue is like a
flute, a darker blue a cello,
darker is a thunderous double bass.
And the darkest blue of all, an organ."”
Wasilly Kandinsky

By follow these “instructions” of Kandinsky, you can

watch the “Composition VIII” like listen to a piece of
music in a blink of eye

DO QUANG VU 13
SPACE IN THE PAINTING

The overlapping of the

geometries creates a neutral
color between them, which
is creating a deeper space
for the painting

A blur affect is being used

behind the circles also create a
depth look for the shapes
