A Fast, Robust & Reliable Wireless Standard

IEEE 802.11ax, also known as Wi-Fi 6, is the successor to 802.11ac and a new standard for wireless local area networks. It is designed to improve spectrum efficiency, throughput, and power consumption. Key features include OFDMA, higher order modulations, and improved power saving protocols to allow more efficient use of the spectrum in high density environments.

IEEE 802.11ax (Wi-Fi 6)

▹ The successor to IEEE 802.11ac, retroactively named Wi Fi 5.

▹ IEEE 802.11ax, marketed as Wi-Fi 6 by the Wi-Fi Alliance.
▹ A standard for wireless local-area networks (WLANs).
▹ The new standard is expected to be published in February
2021.
▹ Designed to operate in 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands.

3
Wi-Fi Technology Evolution

4
Why is 802.11ax needed

▹ To improve spectrum efficient utilization.

▹ New version introduces better power-control methods to
avoid interference with neighboring networks.
▹ Orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA),
higher order 1024-QAM, and up-link direction added with
the down-link of MIMO and MU-MIMO to further increase
throughput.
▹ Improvements of power consumption and security
protocols such as Target Wake Time and WPA3.

5
Challenges

High density of clients

▹ Efficiency at the MAC sublayer always drops as more clients stations join.
▹ Bulk of data frames (75~80%) are small.
▹ Overhead at the MAC layer.
▹ Increased medium contention.
▹ Increased collision.
Airtime Consumption
▹ RF is a half duplex medium, at any given time only one radio can transmit
on a frequency (channel).

Comparison between different Wi-Fi generations:

7
Features

8
Technical Overview

Overlapping Basic Service Set (OBSS):

▹ To improve spatial reuse efficiency and performance, 11ax adjusts
the carrier sense operation based on the color of the BSS.
▹ Depending on the BSS the traffic is generated from, the station
can use different sensitivity thresholds to transmit or defer. This
result in superior spatial reuse.

9
Technical Overview

Target Wake Time (TWT):

▹ TWT is a power saving mechanism in 802.11ah, negotiated between
a STA and it’s AP, which allows the STA to sleep for periods of time,
& wake up in prescheduled times to exchange information with it’s
AP.
▹ This allows the station to sleep longer and reduces energy
consumption.
▹ A key feature for IoT type sensors.

MU-MIMO DL/UL:

Technical Overview

OFDM-802.11a/g/n/ac:

12
Technical Overview

Subcarriers combines into Resources Units (RU):

▹ Frequency allocations for both uplink and downlink.
OFDMA define resources units (RU) with 26, 52, 106,
242, 484 or 996 subcarriers (tones).
▹ Based on multi-client traffic needs, the AP allocates
the channel dynamically. The channel is shared by all
connected clients.

13
Technical Overview

OFDMA:
▹ AP controls the medium both uplink and downlink
frame-by-frame.
▹ Better frequency reuse.
▹ Reduced latency.
▹ Increased efficiency.
