Phase Changes of Matter

ii
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
Welcome to the Science 8 Self-Learning Module on Phase Changes of
Matter.
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators
both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in
helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while
overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their
needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that will help

you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:
Welcome to the Science 8 Self-Learning Module on Phase Changes in Matter
This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful
opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You
will be enabled to process the contents of the learning resource while being an active
learner.

This module has the following parts:

iii
Activity : This will bring understanding to what you already know
and experience to what you should learn further.

Analysis : In this phase, you will process and classify what is valid
and not for a more in-depth understanding.

Abstraction : This part leads you in reinforcing what you know and
should know more. Exercises are presented for
independent practice to solidify your understanding and
skills of the topic.

Application : This stage brings you to a more practical way that you
are going to use what you have learned and think new
ways on how it can be improved further.

INTRODUCTION
Some substances exist in three phases, it depends on the temperature and
atmospheric pressure. Most substances like water, exist in all three phases at
ordinary conditions. Phases of a substance are referred to as phases when they
coexist as physically distinct parts of a mixture. When heat energy is added or
removed from a system, one phase can change to another. In this learning activity
we will use water as a primary example on the phase changes because the phases
of water, which is ice, liquid water, and water vapour, are familiar to you.

If you encounter any difficulty in this module, do not hesitate to consult your

Good Job! You have done answering. You have your previous knowledge
that guide you to explore to our new module.

Are you ready? Let’s go!

REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS MODULE

Recall what you have learned in the previous module about matter and its three
states.
Motivation:
Can you still recall what a matter is? What are the three states of matter and
their properties? What changes take place when water is left in an open container?
In a closed container? What changes takes place when water is heated or cooled?
What changes take place when ice turns into liquid water?

The activity below will acquaint you with some terms, which you will encounter
as the lesson is discussed. Answer the items below using a separate sheet of paper
by identifying the phase of matter being described. Write solid, liquid, or gas if the
property corresponds to such state.
1. has the highest kinetic energy
2. the particles move rapidly in all directions
3. has a fixed shape
4. the particles are disorderly but still close to each other
5. has the lowest kinetic energy

5
6. has a fixed volume
7. particles are very far apart from one another
8. particles are still close enough to each other
9. they do not occupy fixed volumes
10. can be compress

PRESENTATION OF THE MODULE

Have you noticed holding an ice cube with your hands feels cold while trying
to touch the steam in a boiling water feels hot? How do particles move when phase
change occurs? What phase changes involve the release or absorption of energy?

Under different conditions of temperature and pressure, a substance can exist

in different phases. Water for example, can exist as a solid upon freezing. It can exist
as a gas when boiling. The changes are accompanied by the absorption or release
of energy.

ABSTRACTION

9
 Depending on temperature and atmospheric pressure, most substances can
exist in one of three phases. Water, for example, will occur in all three phases
under normal conditions. When substances coexist as physically distinct
sections of a mixture, they are referred to as stages. As heat energy is added
or removed from a device, it moves from one step to the next.

 Melting is the transformation of a solid into a liquid state. As heat is applied to

a solid, the molecules begin to vibrate faster and faster until they have enough
energy to counteract the forces that keep them in their fixed positions. Since
the molecules vibrate so quickly, they dislodge themselves from their fixed
positions. The conversion of a liquid to a gas is known as evaporation.

 Evaporation increases the kinetic energy of the molecules, allowing them to

counteract the forces of attraction between them. These molecules are able to
escape into the gaseous state.

 Condensation is the transformation of a gas or vapor into a liquid. When water

molecules lose energy, their velocity decreases. When the vapor molecules
intersect with another water molecule, they are likely to interact and vapor
phase has transitioned to the liquid phase.

 The method of converting a liquid to a solid is known as freezing. As liquid

water is placed in a freezer, the cooling mechanism of the refrigerator extracts
heat energy from the water molecules, resulting in lower kinetic energy and
slower movement. When more heat is extracted and as the molecules
molecularly align, the forces of attraction between them cause the molecules
to align.

 Deposition is the conversion of a gas or vapor to a solid without going through

the liquid phase first. The opposite of sublimation is deposition. As water
vapor is converted to solid ice crystal shape high in the atmosphere.

 Sublimation is the transformation of a solid into a gas without going through

the liquid phase. When the substance absorbs energy from its surroundings
so fast that it never melts.
