CHAPTER 1
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

Introduction

Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge,

skills, values, beliefs, and habits. Educational methods include storytelling, discussion,

teaching, training, and directed research. Education frequently takes place under the

guidance of educators, but learners may also educate themselves. Education can take

place in formal or informal settings and any experience that has a formative effect on the

way one thinks, feels, or acts may be considered educational.

Computers in Education

Computer technology had a deep impact on the education sector. Thanks to

computers, imparting education has become easier and much more interesting than

before. Owing to memory capacities of computers, large chunks of data can be stored in

them. They enable quick processing of data with very less or no chances of errors in

processing. Networked computers aid quick communication and enable web access.

Storing documents on computers in the form of soft copies instead of the hard ones, helps

save paper. Experts predicts that the time is coming soon when the teacher will be mainly

a facilitator of learning while students sit in front of computers and complete the majority

of their class work, homework and special projects. Uses of computers in education are

becoming common place in school as aids for learning. Computers in the classrooms can

1

K-12 Program

be used as direct educational tools for online learning or can reinforce previously taught

skills. Research students in schools can use as sources for reports.

Now the computer can supplement the curriculum. The computer becomes a part

of the class work. It’s not a substitute for the teacher but a strong assistant. Many children

are able to understand concepts when they are presented on a website that relates to their

life in some way. Computer assisted instruction offers teachers and students another

avenue to learn the required academic material.

Analysis

This graphical presentation simply states that Independent Variable: “The Uses of

Computers and its Importance” is the cause of happenings in Dependent Variable :

“Quality Education”. If there’s no Dependent Variable comes out, of course there is no

Independent Variable that caused everything. In order to be organized, the Independent

Variable must exist before the Dependent Variable. Now the Intervening Variable which

is the “Disadvantages of Using Computers towards Quality Education” is the problem or

the hindrance that affects the Dependent Variable which is the “Quality Education”.

Hypothesis

Hypothesis is nothing but the good way by which researchers finds their

destination. A hypothesis ensures the entire research process remains scientific and

reliable. Though hypothesis are essential during the research process, it can

produce complications with regards to probability, significance and errors.

Hypothesis acts as a guide in research. These hypotheses can give new

knowledge and direction to a researcher. It directs a scientist to know about the

problematic situation and it’s causes. These hypotheses gives new ways to a

researcher. These hypotheses provides lighting to the darkness of research. It gives

difference between scientific and unscientific, false and true answer which is the

null and alternative hypothesis. It prevents blind research and gives accuracy.

Null Hypothesis

1. There are no uses of computers and its importance towards good education as

perceived by the Grade 12 TVL-ICT2 AISAT-College Dasmariñas.

2. There is no students who stated that computers are helpful even though it may

have some bad effects too.

3. There is no students who stated that computers has a positive impact in education

and contributes a lot to increase the level of learning process.

Scope and Limitation of the Study

The coverage of the study focuses on AISAT-College Dasmariñas where

the study is conducted. The information and insights that answers the survey-

questionnaire are from the different sections of Grade 12 TVL-ICT2 students.

The subject of this study is the uses of computers towards good education,

where it is the researchers who want to know and the problems surrounding it.

This study was originally made by the researchers. The future researchers can

use this by simply using it as a reference or guide. The research data is applicable only to

the respondents and the persons covered by this study. The research data is only

applicable to the respondents and the people that is only related to this study and

does not affect the other department.

The researchers used descriptive research with survey in gathering the data

and information that is needed in the research problem. The questionnaire contains

personal information, open-question that contains choices. The researchers created

questions only for the research, and does not allow unnecessary details and

questions.

Significance of the Study

This research will help solve the problem and supports the needs of the

people. Computers are now used in different fields of education. In the field of teaching

and also for the learning process of the students, the wide use of computers are evident in

different schools in elementary, high schools, colleges, and universities including online

schooling, online admission/enrolment and etc. The use of computers in learning

provides both advantages and disadvantages in the learning processes. Computers are

advantageous in the sense that these machines teach more effectively in technical sense,

they can reach and teach more students and kept students more focus with the subject.

The use of computer technology in learning allows the teacher to individualize the

learning instructions as well as the technology grants the students the autonomy and

making them to learn with their own. With the access of the internet, it is also possible to

teach those students or learners that are located in the remote or far places provided these

places have internet signals. These technological capabilities make the teacher to reach as

well as to teach more learners. The internet access will also allow the students to get

different educational resources from all over the world, thus making the world like a

classroom of learning. It enables him or her to access different ideas as well as learning

and knowledge coming from abroad. In teaching kids or young learners, the use of

computers in the teaching processes is very much advantageous. The use of computer

machines could catch the attention of the kids, making them attentive as well as

participative in teaching and learning activities. Making use with these technologies will

allow the teachers to enhance his/her teaching style that could possibly enhance the

learning of the students. The use of computer technology in education makes us prepared

for the future. Computers as used in education allows the student to learn modern tools

and knowledge that will make him or her ready for the possible technological changes in

the future.

The government thrusts that is supports this research is none other than

Department of Education (DEPED). This government agency already implemented the

idea of the Computerization Program released on June 10, 2010.

The study focused on explaining the uses of computers towards good

education at AISAT-College Dasmariñas. Moreover, the results of the study will be

beneficial to the following :

 Respondents. The respondents will have an awareness about the uses of

computers is for educational purpose only. And also they will gain another

knowledge as of how these uses will be effective if they will follow the

accurate way of using computers for education.

 Teachers and Instructors. The result of the study will help the

teachers/instructors to provide encouragement to think of ideas that will

give proper guidance to the students on how they will use computers in

educational purposes and not for pleasure. This may also increase their

competency.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Related Literature

A study of primary school students' interest, collaboration attitude, and computer

empowerment in computational thinking education.

Building on Seymour Papert's view of empowering students by mastering

computer, this study conceptualized computer empowerment as consisting of four

components: meaningfulness, impact, and creative self-efficacy. A sample of 287

primary school students in grades four to six completed a corresponding survey.

Confirmatory factor analysis validated the proposed components of the computer

empowerment instrument. A structural equation model indicated that students with

greater interest in computer education perceived it as more meaningful, had greater

impact and had greater creative self-efficacy. Also, students with attitudes toward

collaboration that were more positive than others had greater creative self-efficacy. Boys

showed more interest in computer than girls did. Students in higher grade levels than

others viewed computer education as less meaningful. These results support future

studies that evaluate the impacts of interest-driven computational thinking and computer

education curriculum with sample collaboration opportunities.

Related Legal Basis

June 10, 2010 DO 78, s. 2010 – Guidelines on the Implementation of the DepEd

Computerization Program (DCP)

1. With the legal mandate of promoting the right of all citizens to take appropriate steps

in making education accessible to all, the Department of Education (DepEd) is geared

towards the transformation of education through the DepEd Computerization Program

(DCP).

2. DCP aims to provide public schools with appropriate technologies that would enhance

the teaching-learning process and meet the challenges of the 21st century. This program

shall respond to the computer backlog of public schools by providing them hardware and

software, and training on simple trouble shooting.

3. Through this program and the combined efforts of other government agencies and the

private sector, 5,409 public secondary schools have been provided with at least one

computer laboratory each. This ranges from 10-20 computer units including other

peripherals depending on the agencies providing the computer units. The objectives of

the DepEd Computerization Program are as follows:

1. Provide computer laboratory packages to secondary schools;

2. Provide e-classroom to elementary schools;

3. Provide laptop units to mobile teachers;

4. Integrate ICT in the school system;

5. Raise the ICT literacy of learners, pupils, students, teachers and school heads; and

6. Reduce the computer backlog in public schools.

Related Local Studies

According to John Paul Obillos Dela Rosa, his study reveals that in a developing

nation like the Philippines, the role of computer in language teaching is deemed vital.

However, the scarcity of ICT resources, such as the limited number of computers and the

unavailability of Internet services, hinder the effective integration of ICT in language

pedagogy. The experiences, perceptions and attitudes of the subjects uncover their

limited know how about computer use and at the same time, the optimism they have

about the future of computer in language teaching, if downsides will be given appropriate

solutions. Finally, this study needs further investigation to justify and validate

conclusions made. Hence, suggestions for further research are highly encouraged. Having

more research participants for the same study would strengthen data presented about the

actual experiences, perceptions and attitudes of language teachers towards computer use.

Moreover, matching the perceptions and attitudes of the language teachers with their

actual classroom practices would give more depth to this study.

For Ma. Mercedes E. Rodrigo, developing countries such as the Philippines are

committed to infusing schools with computer. There is great faith that these

technologies will improve teaching and learning, and consequently afford these

countries a greater stake in today's knowledge society. Consequently, the Philippine

government and the private sector have initiated programs to provide schools with

computer hardware and software, Internet connectivity, and teacher training.

However, considerable gaps still exist in computer program implementations. There is

a lack of data on schools’ use of ICT. Hence, there is little basis for policy

15

K-12 Program

formulation. There is a lack of coordination between public and private sector efforts,

and within computer programs themselves. This leads to wasted time, money, and

human resources. Finally, there is a need for further teacher training in both computer

literacy and ICT integration in the curriculum. These gaps must be sufficiently

addressed before computers can have a significant impact on teaching and learning in

Philippine schools.

Related Foreign Studies

Wighting MJ (2006), has used a mixed method design to determine how far the

use of computers in the classroom affects the sense of learning in a community among

high school students. The main objectives of his study were to study how do high school

students describe classroom community and its importance for their learning and what are

the factors student consider to be important for the development of a sense of classroom

community. Secondly to study the use of technology in their classroom affects students‟

sense of learning in a classroom community. A non random sample of 181 students who

volunteered to participate in the study were selected, out of which 91 students were in

Grade 9 and 90 students were from Grade 11. The sample included 89 boys and 92

students were girls.

The principal selected 12 teachers to participate, some of them used computers

frequently for the purpose of teaching and the others did not. The principal determined

teachers high or low technology use. The author determined equivalent of the groups

regarding students‟ achievement, in terms of student ethnicity. Students who attended the

school were accessed on entry as being of average or above average ability. Students

were drawn from different socio economic backgrounds and some of them were from

other countries. The participants were subjected to a pre study measurement of their

attitude, toward computers. The questionnaire was used where the scale showed an

acceptable level of reliability.

In order to collect qualitative data, the selection was made equitably from within

Grades 9 and 11 by purposeful sampling. The data thus collected was analyzed to

determine equivalently among classes with analysis was conducted on the data by using

the SCCI to investigate the relationship of the instrument‟s subscales with the criterion

variable of high and low computer use in teaching. Content analysis on the qualitative

data was performed by examining topics, categories of topics and patterns across

questions. After analysis the data it was concluded that:

1) A sense of classroom community was present among the participants and

some students were aware of a feeling community and may have benefited from it.

2) Many participants indicated that community was important to them and

helped them in the learning process.

3) The students identified that there were three main factors which were

important concerning sense of community and its importance for the learning. These

factors included technology and the use of computers, sense of community and to their

learning was the amount of trust that they learning subscale of the instruments more

positively than did students who experienced little or no computer use in their class.

Students favor an element of learner control which they can achieve through the use of

technology

4) Students expressed that they believed that they had more control over their

learning with a computer than they did through the use of books.

5) The students considered that they were learning together in a community

and building on information that they acquired either individually or as a class.

Kafai YB and Sutton‟s(1999) have reviewed elementary school students

computer and internet use at home. The authors surveyed 291 parents of an urban

elementary school (K-6), parents reported on their computer at home, the type and

frequency of their children’s educational software and internet use and expressed their

views about creation of connections between computer use at home and school. The

results indicated that most of the students computer use was dedicated to game playing

followed by various other software activates while home computer ownership was not

gender specific activities. Most of the parents suggestions for connecting school and

home focused on ways in which information about students might be obtained from the

school and support through exchanges with teachers. The author‟s discussion deals with

issues and potential directions in academic home computing and role of parents but did

not discuss the infrastructure requird at school and trained teacher in computers.

CHAPTER 3
METHODOLOGY

Research Design

The researchers used descriptive research with survey in conducting this study.

Descriptive research is a study designed to depict the participants in accurate way. The

researchers used only one way to collect information about the study is a survey, which

defined as a brief interview or discussion with an individual about a specific topic. The

researchers think of many ideas about how will they conduct the research and how will

they formulate or construct the research title. The researchers think of situation, issues

and problems that will be useful to everyone. The researchers construct many titles for

them to have many choices.

The researchers defend the title that they formulated by discussing why they

choose the title, what is the importance and the purpose of the title/study. The researchers

started to make the research by starting from Chapter 1. Chapter 1 entitled Background of

the Study. It contains the introduction, where the researchers used many sources. The

important part is the Statement of the Problem which is a definite clear expression or

statement about an area of concern, a condition to be improved upon, a difficulty to be

eliminated, or a troubling question that exists in scholarly literature in theory, or within

existing practice that points a need for meaningful understanding and deliberate

investigation. The other one is the objectives which explains the aim of the work or the

overall purpose of the study that should be clearly and concisely defined.

20
AISAT College – Dasmariñas Inc.
AISAT Building, Emilio Aguinaldo Highway, Dasmariñas, Cavite
K-12 Program

Next is the scope and limitation of the study which is the restriction on the

applicability of a researchers’ report that may arise from the inability to obtain sufficient

appropriate evidence about a component in the statements. Then the other important one

is the Significance of the Study which discusses the importance and states the beneficial

effect of the study to those people who are engaged to this kind of issue/problem.

Chapter 2 discusses the review of related literature, legal basis, and studies. The

researchers used to find sources that is closely related to the topic. Chapter 3

Methodology discusses the methods of research which is been used to conduct this study,

the research design and other parts.

Determination of Sample Size

The researcher requires an understanding of the statistics that drive the range of

sample size. The researchers formulate an equation that simply explains how many

respondents do the research’s need. Here’s the formula to find out the sample size:

{ }
{ }

Where:
N = total number of population
V = Standard value (2.58)
Se = Sampling error (.01)
P= possible proportion (.5)

A questionnaire is a research tool primarily used to collect information from

a population of individuals in a specific geographical area. A survey questionnaire is

a research tool primarily used to collect information from a population of individuals in a

specific geographical area. Survey questionnaires, as we know, contain a series of

questions related to the research being conducted. Often, questionnaires are designed so

that answers to questions are scored and scores summed to obtain an overall measure of

the attitudes and opinions of the respondent. Survey questionnaires are useful in

describing the characteristics of a large population. The researchers believe that no other

research method can provide this broad capability, which ensures a more accurate sample

to gather targeted results in which to draw conclusions and make important decisions.

The researchers made a descriptive research with survey questionnaire which is

the research instrument of this study. They conduct the survey questionnaire by

formulating questions that is relatable and connected to the topic. First, they searched for

more sources and information that is related to their topic to get many ideas. The

researchers also contributed suggestions and ideas on how they will formulate the

questions. The research/survey questionnaire contains respondents’ information,

individual questions that is connected to the ideas of the topic that is answerable by yes or

no, and questions/possible answer to the statement of the problem. This survey

questionnaire is submitted to the research adviser for corrections, suggestions and

validations and it’s been approved to use as a research instrument in the study followed
