Camohoy. Introduction to the Study of Culture.

August 21, 2021

As to reflect to our topic, which is about Culture, is an individual’s culture refers to their
personal ideas, customs, and social behavior. It can be developed from aspects of their lives as
well as individual experiences. Once these elements are understood this becomes a person’s
cultural awareness. Cultural awareness is vital as a foundation of communication and
organization between people of diverse cultures, this then develops into cultural intelligence.
Cultural intelligence is understood as a person’s capability to not only communicate but work
and relate effectively in culturally diverse situations. Cultural self-awareness is critically
important in developing cultural intelligence this is because one must first understand themselves
and their culture before they are able to learn and respect others. Cultural Awareness, the
complete diversity of the people in the world means that everyone we meet has their own culture.
A person’s culture refers to their ideas, customs, beliefs and their social behavior. The term
cultural awareness is defined as the initial foundation of communication between people of
diverse cultures and it involves the ability to stand back from one’s self to become aware of their
own cultural values, beliefs, behavior’s and perceptions. It explains why things are done a certain
way, how the world is seen and why people react the way they do. “Cultural awareness becomes
central when we have to interact with people from other cultures.” Every one of us is different
and different people interpret and evaluate things in many ways. This awareness is important in
avoiding miscommunication and disrespecting other people. Acts and behaviors that are
appropriate and understood in one culture can be considered inappropriate or disrespectful in
another. Cultural self-awareness is important in assisting a person in becoming more culturally
intelligent. Cultural awareness helps us break down cultural barriers, build cultural bridges, and
learn how to love, and appreciate those different from us. We can relate better to people with
cultural differences as we begin to understand ourselves better. This results in more cultural
connection and less cultural conflict. Understanding your own culture, and how it shapes your
behavior, is also an important part of being culturally aware. For example, if you’re faced with a
cultural behavior that’s very different from your own, think about how and why you behave the
way you do.
This being said, my view or definition of culture is naturally influenced by what I know and
encounter each day. There are a series of “key words” that come to mind when I think about
culture: patterns, behavior, traits, symbols, values, knowledge, similarities, models, interaction,
and perspectives. If I sum up these words, I could say that my own definition of culture is all
aspects of human behavior and interaction that make us unique. This behavior is learned and then
expressed repeatedly, giving the individual or individuals what may be viewed as distinct
characteristics. Culture in its essence is how we identify ourselves and perceive those around us.
Some may argue that the only culture we truly understand is our own. While this may be true in
many ways, I am optimistic that through extensive experience and analysis of different cultures,
we can gain a considerable knowledge of these cultures and even begin to adopt them or certain
characteristics of them as our own. I personally identify myself with a variety of cultures. There
are a lot of different cultures in the world we live in today. Finding the place you belong and
discovering your own culture can be a challenge. This is especially true when you look at culture
as an individual versus culture in your family, within your community, or even in your work
place. I’ve always been very family oriented, so that plays a big part in who I am and how my
family’s dynamic works. I believe that my family has had a huge impact on the development of
my culture, and I hope that I have had the same impact on theirs. As everything around me
changed, I adapted, and my culture changed with it. I grew as a person and made life decisions
that affected the way that I lived. I learned so much from the people I created meaningful
relationships and connections with. This made me so much stronger in my faith than I was
before, and I felt that I could put my faith in a higher position in my life.

To apply this Cultural awareness in my workplace where I am assigned right know it is very
important specially dealing with many patients coming to our areas also to my colleague , I
should respect and understand their culture, beliefs values and be open minded.
