Detailed Design Design of Slab

This document provides the design details for an 8.5m x 7.5m reinforced concrete slab with M25 grade concrete and Fe 415 steel reinforcement. The slab is designed as a two-way slab with an effective depth of 210mm. The ultimate design moments and shear forces are calculated based on a factored load of 15.375 KN/m^2. Reinforcement of 12mm diameter bars spaced at 300mm is designed for bending along the shorter span. Checks are performed to ensure the design satisfies requirements for shear and torsion.

DETAILED DESIGN

DESIGN OF SLAB
Edge condition: Two edge discontinues
Slab number:
Size of slab: 8.5m x 7.5m
Use M25 grade of concrete and Fe 415 steel.
EFFECTIVE DEPTH :
Side ratio = Ly / Lx
= 7.5 / 8.5 = 0.88 <2
Hence the slab is to be designed as a two way slab.
As per clause 23.2.1 of IS 456 – 2000 ,
For continuous slabs
Span / depth = 40 × 0.8 = 32
Assuming Pt = 0.4
fs = 0.58 × fy
= 0.58 × 415
= 240 N/mm2
From figure 4 of IS 456- 2000
Modification factor for tension reinforcement = 1.3
D = 7500/ (32 × 1.3)
d = 180 mm
Nominal cover mild exposure from table 16
Overall depth D = 180 +20 + (12/2)
D = 210mm
Therefore, provide a 210mm depth slab.
EFFECTIVE SPAN :
Lx = clear span + effective depth
= 7500 + 210 = 7710 mm
= 7.71m

DESIGN LOADS:
Self-weight of slab = 0.21 x 25 =5.25 KN/m2
Live load = 4KN/m2
floor finish = 1KN/m2
Total load = 10.25 KN/m2
Factored load = 10.25 x 1.5 = 15.375 KN/m2
ULTIMATE DESIGN MOMENT AND SHEAR FORCE :
From table 26 of IS 456 – 2000, bending moment coefficients for ly / lx = 1
αx :
Negative moment = 0.057
Positive moment = 0.043
αy :
Negative moment = -
Positive moment = 0.043
a) Moment along shorter span:
Mx = αxwlx2 (NEGATIVE)
= 0.057 x 15.375 x 7.52
= 49.29 kNm
Mx = αxwlx2 (POSITIVE)
= 0.043 x 15.375 x 7.52
= 37.18 kNm
b) Moment along longer span:
My = αywlx2 (NEGATIVE)
My = αywlx2 (POSITIVE)
= 0.043 x 15.375 x 7.52
=37.18 kNm/
Shear force Calculation
Vu = wlx/2
= (10.875x4.13)/2=22.45Kn
v. CHECK FOR SHEAR:
Mu limit = 0.138 x fck x b x d^2
As per IS 456 2000 Annex C
13.17 x 10^6 = 0.138 x 30 x 1000 x d2
d = 56.40 mm < 96.1 mm
So it is safe.
vi. REINFORCEMENT OF SHORTER SPAN:
Mu = 0.87 fy Ast d (1- Ast fy/ fck b d)
13.17 X 106 = 0.87 x 415 x Ast x 130 [1- (Ast X 415) / (20 x 1000 x 130 )]
=294.4mm2
Spacing should be the least of
1. [ ast / Ast] x 1000 = [π/4 x 12^2/ 294.4 ]x 1000 =384 mm
2. 3d = 3 x 130 = 390m
Therefore provide 12mm dia bars @ 300mm spacing.
CHECK FOR SHEAR:
τv = Vu / bd = 23 x 103 / (1000 x 130) = 0.15 N/mm2
Refer 73, table 19,
τc=100 (Ast/ b d) = 100 x (294.4 / 1000 x 130)
= 0. 22
Hence, τc = 0.22 N /mm2
and k =1.3
τck =0.286 N /mm2
τv < τck
Hence safe.
TORSIONAL REINFORCEMENT:
Length = 1/5 th of shorter span
= 1/5 x 4.23 = 846 mm2
75% of Ast = 0.846 x 294.4 = 250mm2
Spacing = [[(π/4) x 6^2]/ 250] x 1000 = 113.1 mm
Ly = (5230)/8 = 653.75mm
Lx = (4230)/8 = 528.75mm.
