Assignment 1 (coagulation+mixing+flocculation)

1. Given the following data obtained on two water supply sources, determine the
constants A and B. Estimate the number of particles in the size range between 2.1
and 5. Comment on the nature of the particle size distributions.

Bin size, um Particle count

Water A Water B
5.1-10 2500 110
10.1-15 850 80
15.1-20 500 55
20.1-30 250 36
30.1-40 80 25
40.1-50 60 20
50.1-75 28 15
75.1-100 10 10

2. Particles are present in a water with the following chemical characteristics.

Estimate the thickness of the particle electrical double layer.

Cation mg/L Anion mg/L

Ca2+ 40.0 HCO3- 91.5
Mg2+ 12.2 SO42- 72
Na+ 15.1 Cl- 22.9
K+ 5.1 NO3- 5.0

3. A treatment plant has been designed with the capability to add hydrofluosilicic
acid. The mixer installed at the point of chemical addition is warranted to a
coefficient of variation (COV)<=5% across the cross section of flow at the point
where the automatic analyzer draws samples for analysis. In a performance test
during the plant startup samples were taken at nice representative points across
the cross section and the results are reported below. Determine if the mixer is
meeting its specification.
Sample point Fluoride, mg/L
1 1.02
2 1.20
3 0.95
4 0.90
5 1.10
6 0.85
7 0.95
8 0.98
9 0.95

4. Estimate the DOC removal using alum as a function of dose for a concentration range
varying from 0.05 to 0.3 mM for the following conditions: DOC=5mg/L, pH 7 and
(SUVA)raw water=2.75L/mg·m. (note: constants can be obtained from Example 2-4 in
your notes.)
