    Native Americans lived in the Northeast woodlands in the 1300s-1400s. They were members of either the Algonquian or Iroquois language families. The Algonquians lived in wigwams and included tribes like the Abenakis and Wampanoags. The Iroquois lived in longhouses and had a confederacy of tribes like the Mohawk and Oneida. Wampum beads were used by Eastern tribes as currency and records of treaties, kept on strings. The Hiawatha belt depicted the five original Iroquois Confederacy tribes and their buried weapons that forged peace.
